Chapter 2 - The Federal Decapitation

The doors slammed against the oak wainscoting with a thunderous crash that rattled the crystal pendants of the chandelier.

Dozens of federal agents in reinforced black tactical gear, Kevlar vests stamped with yellow FBI lettering, and black helmets poured into the ballroom. Automatic rifles were raised, sweeping the room with disciplined, terrifying precision. The elite guests screamed, scattering backward like panicked sheep, overturning champagne tables and scrambling over velvet chairs.

Chloe shrieked, clutching her designer handbag to her chest and hiding behind Daniel’s broad shoulders.

Daniel froze, his aristocratic composure cracking instantly. His face drained of color, his mouth falling open as he stared at the tactical team flooding the pristine white carpet of his own party.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Arthur Vance bellowed, stepping forward from the dais, his face flushing a furious, apoplectic purple. He pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at the lead tactical officer. “Do you know who I am?! I am Arthur Vance! I am personal friends with the Attorney General! I demand—!”

The lead agent—a towering man with cold, granite-hard gray eyes and a federal badge pinned firmly to his tactical vest—didn't even break his stride. He walked straight past the overturned cupcake tower, ignoring Arthur entirely, and stopped directly in front of me.

Slowly, deliberately, the agent dropped to one knee on the blood-stained carpet.

“Mrs. Vance,” the agent said, his voice deep and respectful. “Are you injured? Do we need a tactical medical unit brought inside immediately?”

The entire room went dead. The silence was so absolute that the hum of the ventilation system sounded like a jet engine.

Three hundred of the wealthiest people in Chicago stared in unmitigated horror as an armed federal commander knelt in the dirt before the woman Daniel had just branded as "barren trash."

I took a slow, deep breath, carefully shifting my weight away from my bruised abdomen. I placed my right hand on the agent’s armored shoulder.

“I’m breathing, Agent Miller,” I whispered, my voice steady, cold, and ringing with absolute authority. “Though my husband did just attempt to induce a miscarriage with a closed fist. Make sure that goes into the primary arrest report.”

Agent Miller’s eyes hardened into chips of ice. He stood up slowly, turning his head toward Daniel, whose knees were visibly trembling beneath his Italian wool trousers.

“Daniel Vance,” Agent Miller boomed, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, international money laundering, conspiracy, securities fraud, and racketeering under the RICO Act.”

“This is insane!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with rising panic as he threw his hands up. “This is a mistake! My father’s legal team will dismantle your entire agency by sundown! Victoria! Tell them! Tell them this is a sick joke!”

He lunged forward, taking a step toward me, desperation and fury warring on his face.

Before he could take a second step, two tactical agents slammed into him from either side, driving his face hard against the mahogany surface of the gift table. A sickening thud echoed as his expensive glasses shattered against the wood. His arms were wrenched violently behind his back, and the steel cuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final snap.

“Get your hands off me, you fascist pigs!” Daniel screamed, kicking his legs as they hauled him upright.

Across the room, Eleanor Vance lost all pretense of her aristocratic dignity. She shrieked like a banshee, rushing down the steps of the dais. “Arthur! Do something! They’re arresting our son! They’re arresting Daniel!”

Arthur Vance was already pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, his fingers shaking so violently he dropped it onto the floor. Two federal agents stepped forward, their rifles lowered, blocking his path.

“Arthur Vance,” another agent called out, pulling a second arrest warrant from a leather folio. “You are also under federal arrest as the primary architect of the Vance Industries embezzlement ring and shell company network.”

Arthur staggered backward, catching himself against the edge of the champagne table. His face turned an ashen, ghostly gray. He looked around the room, expecting his powerful friends—the judges, the senators, the CEOs—to rush to his defense.

Instead, every single one of them was actively turning their backs, frantically deleting text messages, distancing themselves from the sinking titanic of the Vance dynasty.

Chloe Parker began to hyperventilate. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the carpet, her makeup running in black streaks down her cheeks. “I don’t even know him!” she sobbed hysterically. “I’m just an intern! I swear I’m just an intern!”

Agent Miller looked down at Chloe with absolute disgust before turning his attention back to me.

“The secure servers at Vance headquarters have been successfully seized, Mrs. Vance,” Miller reported quietly, ensuring only I could hear. “Every single file you decrypted and organized over the last fourteen months is currently being downloaded to federal mainframes in Quantico. Your father-in-law’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich have been frozen. Total asset seizure is estimated at 4.2 billion dollars.”

I closed my eyes for a single second, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of pure, vindictive relief.

Fourteen months of sitting in the dark of my study while my husband slept beside me, smelling of cheap perfume and betrayal. Fourteen months of downloading encrypted hard drives, tracing wire transfers through shell companies in Panama, and translating financial documents written in corporate obfuscation.

They thought I was a trophy wife who spent her days buying shoes and planning flower arrangements.

They didn't know I had graduated top of my class with a master’s degree in forensic accounting from the London School of Economics before Daniel’s father forced me into a marriage designed to absorb my family’s remaining corporate assets.

“Thank you, Agent Miller,” I said smoothly, pushing myself up off the floor with the help of a female paramedic who had finally pushed past the tactical line with a stretcher. “Please ensure that Daniel and Arthur are placed in maximum-security holding cells. They have very expensive lawyers; I want zero loopholes.”

“Consider it done, ma’am,” Miller nodded crisply.

As Daniel was dragged past me toward the shattered double doors, his face bruised, his hair disheveled, and his expensive suit stained with pink cupcake frosting, he locked eyes with me one last time.

In his eyes, there was no arrogance left. Only stark, unadulterated terror.

“Victoria…” he choked out, his voice a pathetic, broken whisper. “Please… we have a baby… think of the family…”

“The only thing dying in this room today, Daniel,” I whispered back, stepping smoothly onto the paramedic's stretcher, “is your legacy.”
