PART 3 — THE INVESTIGATORS AT THE DOOR

Nobody moved.

The knock echoed through the bridal suite like a judge's gavel.

For one long second, all four of us simply stared at the door.

Then came another knock.

Harder.

More deliberate.

"Mr. Brooks?"

The hotel employee sounded nervous now.

"The investigators said it's urgent."

I watched the color drain from Ethan's face.

Not embarrassment.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

The kind that appears when a person suddenly realizes a lie has reached its expiration date.

Vanessa recovered first.

"Don't open it."

Her voice was sharp.

Commanding.

The same tone she had used all evening.

But this time nobody listened.

Ethan looked trapped.

Sophia looked seconds away from panic.

And I felt strangely calm.

My father was right.

Truth has a way of arriving exactly when it's needed.

Ethan swallowed.

"They can't be here because of that."

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew exactly what "that" meant.

The missing file.

The stolen data.

The secret they thought had disappeared forever.

Another knock.

Louder this time.

"Mr. Brooks?"

"Federal investigators."

"We need to speak with you."

Sophia grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Ethan..."

Her voice trembled.

"You said there wasn't any evidence."

"There wasn't."

The answer came too quickly.

Too defensively.

The response of a guilty man trying to convince himself.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Emma."

Her eyes locked onto mine.

"We can resolve this privately."

I almost laughed.

Privately.

Five minutes ago she was discussing how to destroy my life.

Now she wanted privacy.

"No."

Her jaw tightened.

"Think carefully."

"I am."

"Your reputation could suffer too."

I stared at her.

Then smiled.

"You're assuming I'm worried about my reputation."

The third knock shook the door.

"Mr. Brooks."

"Open the door."

The authority in the voice left little room for negotiation.

Ethan finally moved.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Like a prisoner approaching a courtroom.

He opened the door.

Two people stood outside.

A man and a woman.

Both wearing dark suits.

Both carrying federal credentials.

The older investigator spoke first.

"Ethan Brooks?"

"Yes."

"We need a few minutes of your time."

His voice remained professional.

Neutral.

But his eyes were already studying the room.

The wedding dress.

The shattered champagne glass.

The terrified expressions.

The obvious tension.

Years of experience probably told him everything he needed to know.

"I'm Special Agent Ryan Foster."

"This is Special Agent Melissa Grant."

"We're conducting an investigation involving Apex Development."

Nobody breathed.

The silence became painful.

Then Agent Foster continued.

"We have reason to believe company documents were illegally accessed and transferred."

Ethan forced a laugh.

"That has nothing to do with me."

The investigators exchanged a glance.

A brief one.

But meaningful.

Agent Grant opened a folder.

Pulled out several photographs.

Then handed them to Ethan.

I watched his face.

The moment he saw the images, his expression collapsed.

There it was.

Confirmation.

The photographs meant something.

Something bad.

"What are those?" Sophia whispered.

Ethan didn't answer.

His hands were shaking.

Agent Foster did.

"Security footage."

"We recovered deleted data from a server archive last week."

My pulse quickened.

Recovered.

Not lost.

Not destroyed.

Recovered.

The investigator continued.

"These images place Mr. Brooks inside a restricted records facility two nights before the file disappeared."

Vanessa took a step backward.

Sophia looked ready to faint.

And Ethan finally stopped pretending.

"That's impossible."

"No," Agent Grant replied calmly.

"It's documented."

She opened another file.

"There are also financial transfers."

The room went silent again.

Financial transfers.

I looked directly at Ethan.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

Not anymore.

Agent Foster continued.

"Several payments were routed through intermediary accounts."

"We've traced them."

"Those accounts ultimately connect to an investment group under investigation for corporate espionage."

Corporate espionage.

The words landed like explosives.

Sophia gasped.

Vanessa grabbed the edge of a chair.

And suddenly everyone understood the scale of the disaster.

This wasn't just theft.

This wasn't just fraud.

This was federal.

Serious.

Potentially criminal.

The kind of accusation capable of destroying careers, fortunes, and freedom.

"Ethan..."

Sophia's voice barely existed.

"What did you do?"

For the first time all evening, he had no answer.

No charm.

No confidence.

No manipulation.

Only silence.

Agent Grant turned toward me.

"Emma Carter?"

"Yes."

"We received copies of recordings sent from your account."

I nodded.

The investigator's expression softened slightly.

"That was the correct decision."

Vanessa immediately snapped.

"Those recordings are private conversations."

Agent Foster looked unimpressed.

"No."

"They're evidence."

Vanessa stopped talking.

The agents weren't interested in excuses.

Only facts.

And facts were becoming very dangerous.

Then Agent Grant asked the question nobody expected.

"Mr. Brooks."

Her voice became sharper.

"Where is file 17-C?"

The reaction was immediate.

Ethan froze.

Completely froze.

A tiny movement.

A widening of the eyes.

Nothing more.

But enough.

The investigators noticed it.

So did I.

Agent Foster noticed too.

"There it is."

The room became even quieter.

"What?" Sophia asked.

"What does that mean?"

The investigators ignored her.

Their attention remained fixed on Ethan.

Because they had seen something important.

Fear.

Recognition.

Knowledge.

He knew exactly what file 17-C was.

And apparently he wasn't supposed to.

Agent Grant closed her folder.

"Mr. Brooks."

"I strongly advise you to obtain legal counsel."

Vanessa suddenly exploded.

"This is ridiculous."

"You can't accuse someone without proof."

Agent Foster slowly turned toward her.

"Mrs. Brooks."

His voice remained calm.

"We don't conduct interviews at midnight on wedding days unless we already have proof."

That ended the argument.

Immediately.

Completely.

Then my phone rang again.

My father.

I answered.

"Emma."

His voice sounded different.

Stronger.

More focused.

"Are the investigators there?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then:

"We found the missing file."

Every person in the room looked at me.

Even the investigators.

"What?" I whispered.

"We found it twenty minutes ago."

My father's voice hardened.

"It wasn't destroyed."

"It was hidden."

I stared at Ethan.

His face had become completely pale.

"Where?"

Another pause.

Then my father delivered the sentence that shattered the room.

"It was stored inside a private cloud account registered under Sophia Reynolds."

Sophia dropped her phone.

The device hit the floor with a crack.

"No."

Her voice broke instantly.

"No, no, no."

She turned toward Ethan.

Pure horror in her eyes.

"Ethan..."

He looked away.

And that was answer enough.

Sophia realized the truth before anyone else.

She had been used.

Just like me.

The baby.

The affair.

The promises.

Everything.

A convenient distraction.

A convenient storage location.

A convenient accomplice.

Whether she knew it or not.

Tears filled her eyes.

"What did you do?"

Ethan still didn't answer.

Because for the first time since I'd known him, there was nothing left to say.

Then Agent Foster reached into his jacket.

And slowly removed a folded document.

A warrant.

The sight of it made Ethan stumble backward.

Because suddenly this wasn't an investigation.

It was an arrest waiting to happen.

And the worst part?

The investigators still hadn't told us what was actually inside file 17-C.

May you like

But judging from the fear in Ethan's eyes...

Whatever that file contained was far worse than stolen money.
