Part 6: The Person Behind the Message

Part 6: The Person Behind the Message

I stared at the screen.

The photo.

The message.

The unknown sender.

Everything pointed to one thing.

There was more.

Much more.

Derek had spent months convincing everyone that he was building a new life.

But what if even that was a lie?

What if Valerie was not the only person he deceived?

My first instinct was to call Lauren.

I reached for my phone.

Then stopped.

No.

Not yet.

Because whoever sent this wanted a reaction.

And Derek had taught me something.

Never show people your next move.

So instead, I saved the message.

Downloaded the photo.

Added it to the evidence folder.

Then I waited.

The next morning, Derek acted strangely.

He was cheerful.

Too cheerful.

He walked into the kitchen humming.

Something he never did.

“You’re up early,” he said.

I looked at him.

“So are you.”

He smiled.

“Big day.”

There it was again.

A big day.

The phrase he loved using when something was happening behind my back.

“Another zoning meeting?”

I asked casually.

His smile lasted half a second too long.

“Actually, no.”

Interesting.

“Something else?”

He poured coffee.

“Just work.”

A vague answer.

A carefully designed answer.

But he forgot something.

I had spent years listening to his lies.

I knew the shape of them.

“Derek.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“Who paid for Valerie’s apartment?”

The coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth.

The reaction was immediate.

A tiny crack.

Then he recovered.

“What?”

I smiled.

“Just curious.”

He laughed.

“Why would I know?”

I shrugged.

“No reason.”

And there it was.

The same fear again.

The same uncertainty.

He put the cup down.

“Claire.”

His voice changed.

“What is this?”

I looked at him.

“What is what?”

“Are you accusing me of something?”

I smiled softly.

“No.”

Then I walked away.

Because sometimes the strongest answer is leaving someone alone with their own panic.

An hour later, Lauren called.

“Claire.”

Her voice sounded serious.

“I traced the photo.”

I sat down.

“And?”

“The person who sent it used a private relay.”

“Can you find them?”

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But I found something else.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“The man in the photo.”

I waited.

“His name is Marcus Reed.”

I frowned.

“Derek’s partner?”

“Yes.”

“What about him?”

Lauren became quiet.

“He owns the company that processed several of Derek’s recent transfers.”

My hands went cold.

“The apartment?”

“Yes.”

“The medical bills?”

“Yes.”

“The furniture?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

So Derek wasn’t just cheating.

He wasn’t just stealing from me.

He was moving money through his business network.

Creating a hidden financial system.

“Why?”

Lauren answered:

“That’s what we need to find out.”

That afternoon, I went to my office.

The same office where Derek used to sit beside me and talk about our future.

Now it felt like a battlefield.

I opened old files.

Old emails.

Old documents.

Then I found something.

A contract.

Three years old.

A business investment agreement.

My name was on it.

But I never signed it.

I stared.

Then I checked the date.

The same month Derek started pushing me to invest more into his business.

The same month he told me:

“Partners should trust each other.”

My hands shook.

He used my money.

My identity.

My trust.

And now I finally saw the pattern.

Derek didn’t marry me because he loved me.

He married me because I was useful.

The exact same thing he said about me to Valerie.

The same cruelty.

The same belief.

My phone rang.

Lauren.

“Claire, we need to talk.”

“I found something.”

“So did I.”

I froze.

“What did you find?”

A pause.

“Derek wasn’t planning to divorce you after the promotion.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He was planning something else.”

The room felt colder.

“What?”

Her voice lowered.

“He was preparing to transfer everything.”

My heart stopped.

“Everything?”

“Your assets. Your accounts. The house.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“How?”

“Through legal documents.”

I looked at the contract in front of me.

The fake signature.

The hidden agreements.

“He wanted to make it look like you approved.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Lauren said:

“Claire, I need you to listen carefully.”

I waited.

“Derek was never planning to leave you with nothing.”

A pause.

“He was planning to leave you responsible for everything.”

The words hit me.

Not just losing my marriage.

Not just losing money.

He wanted to destroy my reputation.

My career.

My future.

He wanted me to look like the criminal.

The person who failed.

The person everyone blamed.

I whispered:

“Why?”

Lauren’s answer was quiet.

“Because people like Derek don’t just want to win.”

She paused.

“They want the other person to lose.”

That evening, I made a decision.

No more waiting.

No more watching.

It was time for Derek to make a mistake.

And I knew exactly how.

I went downstairs.

He was sitting on the couch.

Looking at his phone.

Smiling.

Probably texting Valerie.

Probably planning the life he thought he would have.

“Derek.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

I sat beside him.

Something I hadn’t done in weeks.

His face softened.

He thought he was getting me back.

“I’ve been thinking.”

His eyes brightened.

“About what?”

I looked at him.

“Maybe you were right.”

He frowned.

“About what?”

“Our marriage.”

I let the words hang.

“I think maybe we both need a fresh start.”

His entire expression changed.

Hope.

Relief.

Confidence.

Exactly what I wanted.

“Claire…”

He reached for my hand.

“I knew you’d understand.”

I smiled.

The same smile I gave him the morning he called me a good wife.

The same smile he misunderstood.

“You always said I accept everything.”

He laughed softly.

“You do.”

I looked into his eyes.

“And maybe that’s why you never saw me coming.”

The smile disappeared.

“What?”

I stood.

“Nothing.”

I walked away.

But before I reached the stairs, I turned back.

“Oh, Derek?”

“Yes?”

“Tomorrow, someone will contact you about the apartment.”

His face changed.

“What apartment?”

I smiled.

“The one you paid for with my money.”

For the first time...

Derek looked genuinely afraid.

Because he finally understood.

May you like

The woman he thought he knew...

Was gone.
