PART 2

I stayed completely still.
Even though every instinct inside me screamed to move.
To open my eyes.
To grab Leo and pull him away.
To scream at Marcus and Victoria for what they had done.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
Because Leo was right.
If they knew I was awake…
If they knew I had heard everything…
They would panic.
And desperate people were dangerous.
Especially people who had already tried to kill me.
So I stayed trapped inside my own body.
Listening.
Waiting.
Watching the world through darkness.
Marcus stared at Leo.
“What did you say?”
My son’s breathing became shaky.
But he didn’t run.
He didn’t cry.
My little boy, who was afraid of thunder, was standing in front of two adults who wanted him powerless.
“I said nothing.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Don’t lie to me.”
Victoria quickly placed a hand on Marcus’s arm.
“Careful.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“If he knows something, we shouldn’t scare him.”
I hated how easily she played the caring aunt.
How easily she could smile after betraying me.
Marcus looked at her.
“You heard him.”
“Yes.”
Victoria glanced at Leo.
Then at me.
“He said Valerie told him to call Lawson.”
A long silence.
Then Marcus laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“Valerie always thought she was smarter than everyone.”
My heart burned.
He said my name like I was already dead.
Like I was a problem he had solved.
“She probably prepared some dramatic little document.”
Victoria nodded.
“But if she’s unconscious…”
“She can’t sign anything.”
My mind raced.
They didn’t know.
They didn’t know the new will was already valid.
They didn’t know the trust was already protected.
They didn’t know the documents were not the only thing I changed.
Because two weeks before the accident…
I had changed everything.
The memory returned.
My attorney’s office.
Late afternoon.
Rain against the windows.
Ms. Lawson sat across from me with a serious expression.
“Valerie, are you sure?”
I looked at the documents in front of me.
“Yes.”
“You understand what this means?”
I nodded.
“I do.”
She lowered her voice.
“You are removing Marcus from direct control of the family assets.”
“I know.”
“And naming Leo as the primary beneficiary?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“He’s nine.”
“That’s why the trust exists.”
Ms. Lawson studied me.
“What made you do this?”
For a moment, I said nothing.
Because admitting it made everything real.
Then I whispered:
“I found hidden transfers.”
Her expression changed.
“What kind?”
“Money moved from our accounts.”
“How much?”
“Nearly two million dollars.”
Silence.
“Are you sure Marcus was involved?”
I looked down.
“No.”
A pause.
“Not only him.”
Ms. Lawson understood.
“Victoria?”
I nodded.
My own sister.
The person who knew my passwords.
The person who knew my routines.
The person who hugged me and called me her best friend.
She had been helping Marcus.
And I had no idea how long.
“I need protection for Leo.”
Ms. Lawson leaned forward.
“Valerie, if you believe your life is at risk, you need to contact the police.”
I looked at her.
“I need proof first.”
Because accusations without evidence were easy to destroy.
Especially when the people you accused had money.
Power.
A perfect public image.
So I created a safety plan.
And I told Leo only one thing.
“If Mommy ever can’t talk to you, call Ms. Lawson.”
Nothing more.
I never imagined he would need to.
The hospital room returned.
Marcus walked around my bed.
“She won’t wake up.”
The words felt like a knife.
Victoria looked nervous.
“What about the attorney?”
Marcus waved dismissively.
“Lawson can’t do anything without Valerie.”
My anger grew.
Because he still underestimated me.
“I know where she keeps her emergency access codes.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You’re sure?”
Marcus smiled.
“I’ve been her husband for ten years.”
A cold feeling spread through me.
Ten years.
And he still thought he knew me.
Victoria moved closer.
“What about the boy?”
Marcus looked at Leo.
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Calculation.
“We take him home.”
“No!”
Leo shouted.
The sound surprised even me.
Marcus grabbed his arm.
“Enough.”
My entire body wanted to move.
But Leo suddenly did something unexpected.
He kicked him.
Hard.
Marcus released him.
Leo ran to the opposite side of the room.
“You’re not my dad!”
The words hit Marcus harder than any physical attack.
For a second, he looked wounded.
Then his face became cold.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I do.”
Leo’s voice shook.
“You’re waiting for my mom to die.”
Silence.
Then…
A tiny movement.
Not from me.
From the hallway.
Someone was outside the door.
Marcus noticed.
His expression changed.
“Who is there?”
No answer.
He walked toward the door.
Victoria looked at Leo.
Then at me.
And for the first time…
I saw fear in her eyes.
Because someone else knew.
Someone they didn’t expect.
The door suddenly opened.
A hospital security officer stood there.
Behind him…
Was Ms. Lawson.
My attorney.
The woman who knew exactly what I had planned.
Marcus froze.
“How did you—”
Ms. Lawson looked at Leo.
Then at me.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Like she noticed something.
Something tiny.
Something only she would understand.
“Valerie asked me to come.”
Marcus laughed nervously.
“She’s unconscious.”
Ms. Lawson stepped into the room.
“Yes.”
She looked directly at him.
“But she’s still legally capable of protecting her family.”
The color drained from his face.
Because those were not the words of someone who had lost.
Those were the words of someone who knew the game had changed.
Victoria whispered:
“Impossible.”
Ms. Lawson ignored her.
She walked to my bedside.
Placed a folder on the table.
And said quietly:
“Valerie prepared for exactly this situation.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“What is that?”
Ms. Lawson smiled.
“A recorded statement.”
The room went silent.
My heart raced.
Because I knew what she meant.
Before the crash…
I had left one final message.
Just in case.
Ms. Lawson opened the folder.
And pressed play.
My own voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this…”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Something has happened to me.”
The recording continued.
“And if Marcus or Victoria are standing nearby…”
May you like
A pause.
“Then they are the reason.”
