PART 6: The Woman Who Knew My Mother’s Killer

PART 6: The Woman Who Knew My Mother’s Killer
Nobody reacted.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the biggest shocks don’t create screams.
They create silence.
The kind of silence where your mind refuses to accept what your eyes are seeing.
The woman stood in the doorway.
A stranger.
Yet she carried the one thing everyone in that house feared.
The truth.
She looked at my grandmother.
Eleanor Blackwood.
The woman who had arrived like a savior.
The woman who had wrapped me in her coat.
The woman who had promised she would protect me.
And she said:
“You know who I am.”
My grandmother’s face had lost all color.
“No.”
The woman gave a sad smile.
“You always were good at pretending.”
My father stared at her.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked at him.
“Someone who watched your family destroy itself.”
A pause.
“My name is Claire Morgan.”
My grandmother whispered:
“Claire…”
The way she said the name told me everything.
She knew her.
I stepped forward.
“Grandma?”
Eleanor didn’t look at me.
And that hurt.
Because I wanted her to deny it.
I wanted her to say:
“I have never seen this woman.”
But she didn’t.
Claire walked into the room.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she knew everyone inside was dangerous.
“I worked for Blackwood Holdings.”
My stomach tightened.
Another connection.
Another hidden piece.
“Worked for my grandmother?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
My grandmother finally found her voice.
“That was years ago.”
Claire looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“The same years your daughter was trying to expose you.”
The words landed hard.
My father looked at Eleanor.
“Is this true?”
My grandmother stayed silent.
That was becoming her answer.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Grandma.”
She looked at me.
Her eyes were full of pain.
“I wanted to explain.”
“Then explain.”
My voice shook.
“Please.”
For the first time all night…
Eleanor looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a woman carrying years of secrets.
“I made mistakes.”
I laughed softly.
“Everyone says that after they hurt someone.”
She closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Claire opened the folder.
“I have proof.”
My grandmother looked at it.
“Claire.”
Her voice became serious.
“Don’t do this.”
Claire stared at her.
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because you’re afraid Emma will see who you really are?”
My grandmother didn’t answer.
Claire placed the folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Reports.
My hands trembled as I looked.
The first page had my mother’s name.
Amelia Parker.
My mother.
I touched the paper.
“What is this?”
Claire looked at me.
“Your mother’s investigation.”
She opened another page.
“She discovered financial transfers from Blackwood Holdings into private research facilities.”
My grandmother immediately said:
“Those were medical projects.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“They were experiments.”
The room went quiet.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Is that true?”
She looked away.
That was the answer.
My breathing became harder.
“What kind of experiments?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire said:
“Human testing.”
My blood turned cold.
The words didn’t make sense.
Not in my family.
Not with my grandmother.
The woman who donated millions to hospitals.
The woman everyone admired.
Human testing?
My father looked at Eleanor with disbelief.
“You knew?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know what it became.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That’s what you tell yourself.”
My grandmother turned.
“I funded research.”
“Yes.”
Claire nodded.
“And when you realized what they were doing?”
Silence.
“You covered it up.”
I looked at Eleanor.
My grandmother.
My protector.
“Did you?”
Her lips parted.
No answer.
I stepped back.
My whole life felt like it was collapsing.
My father lied.
Victoria lied.
Now my grandmother.
Who was left?
Who had actually loved me?
Claire looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Emma.”
I shook my head.
“Why are you telling me this?”
She hesitated.
Then looked at Eleanor.
“Because your mother trusted me.”
My heart stopped.
“My mother knew you?”
Claire nodded.
“She came to me before she died.”
The room froze.
“What did she say?”
Claire’s expression changed.
Pain.
“She knew she was in danger.”
My fingers went numb.
“She asked me to protect you.”
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
“She knew?”
Claire nodded.
“She knew someone wanted her silent.”
My father whispered:
“Who?”
Claire looked at him.
“You.”
Everyone froze.
My father stepped back.
“What?”
Claire shook her head.
“Not you alone.”
A pause.
“You were involved.”
My father’s face collapsed.
“But you weren’t the one who ordered it.”
I looked at her.
“Then who?”
Claire turned toward Eleanor.
The room became unbearable.
My grandmother whispered:
“No.”
Claire opened another document.
A signature.
A date.
A payment authorization.
My grandmother’s name.
My hands covered my mouth.
“No…”
Eleanor looked at me.
“Emma.”
I stepped away.
“Don’t.”
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I was trying to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.”
A pause.
“But everyone who hurt me says they were protecting me.”
The words destroyed her.
I saw it.
She had no defense.
Claire looked at me.
“Your mother found out your grandmother planned to shut down the investigation.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
Claire lowered her voice.
“She wanted the files destroyed.”
My heart raced.
“Why?”
Claire answered:
“Because she was afraid the truth would destroy everything.”
A pause.
“Your grandmother believed protecting the family name was more important than the truth.”
I looked at Eleanor.
“Did you kill my mother?”
The question filled the room.
Nobody moved.
My grandmother’s face broke.
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
“I did not kill her.”
A pause.
“But…”
Everyone waited.
She whispered:
“I let her go.”
My blood froze.
“What?”
Eleanor sat down.
Her hands shook.
“The night of the accident…”
She looked at me.
“I knew she was leaving.”
My voice was barely audible.
“Leaving with me?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you stopped her?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I tried to convince her to stay.”
A pause.
“She refused.”
My grandmother looked down.
“She told me if she stayed, you would never be safe.”
Silence.
“What happened then?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I let her leave.”
A pause.
“And twenty minutes later…”
Her voice broke.
“She was dead.”
Nobody spoke.
Because now the truth was worse.
Not murder.
Not exactly.
Something more complicated.
Something that could never be fixed.
Claire stepped forward.
“But there is one thing Eleanor never told you.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
Claire looked at me.
“The accident wasn’t random.”
My heart stopped.
“Someone followed your mother.”
A pause.
“And they weren’t after her.”
She looked at me.
“They were after you.”
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Me?”
Claire nodded.
“Your mother discovered something.”
“What?”
Claire opened the final document.
A medical report.
My name was written at the top.
I stared.
Because underneath it were words that made my entire body go cold.
Subject: Emma Parker
Status: Protected Asset
Original Research Connection: Unknown
I looked up.
“What does this mean?”
Nobody answered.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“Your mother never told me.”
A pause.
“She found out too late.”
My voice shook.
“Found out what?”
My grandmother looked at me.
And said the words that changed everything:
“Emma…”
May you like
“You weren’t just the daughter they were protecting.”
“You were the reason they started the experiments.”
