Jesy Nelson Shares Heartbreaking Update on Twin Daughters’ Battle with SMA: ‘They Are the Strongest Babies’

Jesy Nelson has bravely shared a heartbreaking update about her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, who are undergoing treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at the renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital. The former Little Mix star, 34, posted poignant photos of her nine-month-old babies, wearing leg splints as they cuddle up in their hospital bed. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Jesy is determined to fight for her daughters’ future.

Ocean and Story’s journey began in January when Jesy revealed that they had been diagnosed with SMA, a genetic disorder that affects motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to severe muscle weakness. In its most severe form, SMA Type 1, babies often have a life expectancy of less than two years without treatment.

But despite the odds, Jesy has not given up hope.

A Glimmer of Hope: Newborn SMA Screening in Scotland
Jesy’s latest post comes after a deeply emotional visit to a Scottish laboratory, where a newborn blood spot screening for SMA is now being tested. In a moving Instagram post, Jesy shared a photo with medical staff at the laboratory, expressing her gratitude for the life-saving progress.

She wrote, “Emotional day in Scotland visiting the newborn blood spot screening laboratory for SMA.” The pilot program, which tests all babies born in Scotland, is set to be rolled out across the UK, giving hope to many families facing the same battle.

Jesy’s fight to raise awareness for SMA is personal. She believes that if newborn screening had been in place when Ocean and Story were born, their lives could have been very different.

Fighting for Change and Making Every Moment Count
Despite the heartbreaking prognosis, Jesy continues to push forward, determined to make a change for her girls. Speaking candidly, she shared, “My girls are the strongest, most resilient babies. I believe they will defy all the odds.”

Jesy is now using her voice to campaign for SMA testing to be added to the NHS newborn screening program. Last month, her petition reached over 100,000 signatures, meaning it will be debated in Parliament. This milestone was a huge victory, and Jesy couldn’t hold back her tears as she expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported the cause.
