PART 2: The Moment I Realized I Married a Stranger

Vanessa slowly turned her head.
Her expression changed.
Like I had insulted her.
“Excuse me?”
I folded my arms.
“You heard me.”
Daniel stopped eating.
His eyes moved between us.
“Emily.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“She asked you to bring her food.”
I looked at him.
“She’s sitting six feet away from the table.”
“So?”
“So I’m not serving dinner to someone who refuses to move.”
Vanessa laughed.
A cold, sharp laugh.
“Wow.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Two days.”
“What?”
“Two days married and she already thinks she’s in charge.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
I suddenly felt like I wasn’t talking to my husband anymore.
I was talking to someone who had been hiding.
“Emily,” he said.
“What?”
“Apologize.”
I stared at him.
“For what?”
“For disrespecting my sister.”
I actually laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe it.
“I came home from work, cooked everyone dinner, and you want me to apologize because I asked her to sit at the table?”
Vanessa smiled.
“She doesn’t understand how this family works.”
Family.
That word stayed in my mind.
Because I was supposed to be part of it.
But standing there, I felt like an outsider.
Daniel pushed his chair back.
“Last warning.”
I looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
The second I said it, I knew I had challenged him.
His eyes changed.
He stepped toward me.
I backed up slightly.
Not because I was afraid.
Because my body recognized danger before my mind did.
“Say sorry,” he demanded.
“No.”
His hand moved.
Fast.
The sound echoed through the room.
A sharp crack.
My head turned.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what happened.
Then the pain came.
My cheek burned.
My ears rang.
I stood completely frozen.
Vanessa was staring.
Daniel was breathing heavily.
Nobody spoke.
The television continued playing in the background.
A fake laugh track from the show filled the silence.
And suddenly I understood.
The man who promised to protect me…
Had just become the person I needed protection from.
I slowly touched my cheek.
My fingers trembled.
Daniel looked almost surprised.
Like he didn’t expect himself to actually do it.
“Emily…”
I stepped away.
No tears.
No screaming.
Just silence.
Then I walked to the table.
I grabbed the plate.

And pushed everything away.
The dishes crashed.
Food spilled across the floor.
The sound finally broke the room.
Vanessa gasped.
Daniel stared.
I looked at him.
Really looked at him.
May you like
And I said:
“You just made the biggest mistake of your life.”
