Chapter 2 - The Twenty-Eight-Year Lie

The room descended into absolute chaos, but inside the dark fortress of my mind, those six words echoed with atomic force.
Your real father is here now.
Every memory I had of my childhood suddenly felt warped, like looking through a cracked glass lens. I remembered the endless coldness in my mother’s eyes whenever she looked at me compared to the adoration she showered on Cole. I remembered how Victor would look right past me at dinner, as if I were an intrusive ghost sitting at his table. I had spent twenty-six years believing I was simply unlovable—that my failure to conform to their high-society expectations made me defective.
I wasn't defective. I was a living monument to a secret they had tried to murder twenty-eight years ago.
"You are trespassing, Vance!" Victor shouted, his composure shattering completely. "I don't care what fairytale you've concocted! I am Eliza’s legal father! Her birth certificate bears my signature!"
"A signature obtained through forgery and forced confinement," Julian Vance replied coldly. "I brought three federal marshals and a court-ordered emergency injunction signed by the Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit District Court. As of four minutes ago, Victor, your medical power of attorney over Eliza Hartwell has been permanently revoked."
"On what grounds?!" Diane shrieked. "She is my daughter!"
"On the grounds that you are currently under federal investigation for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, and treason," Julian said.
I heard the heavy, rhythmic rustle of paper being pulled from an envelope.
"Nurse Sarah," Julian addressed the nurse softly. "I am placing this patient under the care of Dr. Marcus Reed, Chief of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, who is currently landing at Boeing Field via private transport. Until he arrives, no one touches my daughter without my explicit written consent. If anyone attempts to remove her breathing tube, shoot them."
"Shoot them?!" Dr. Vance gasped. "Are you out of your mind?! This is a hospital!"
"This is a war zone, Doctor," Julian corrected him coldly. "And you are standing on the wrong side of the trench."
I felt Julian’s thumb gently pad across the back of my hand. The warmth of his skin was intoxicating, a lifeline pulling me back from the dark abyss I had been slipping into.
"Sarah," Julian asked quietly. "Is she conscious?"
"I... I think so, sir," Sarah stammered, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "She twitched her right eyelid twice when her father—I mean, when Mr. Hartwell was speaking about the DNR."
"Eliza," Julian’s voice hovered inches from my cheek. "If you can hear me, my sweet girl... twitch your eye again. Just once for your papa."
I gathered every drop of strength remaining in my shattered nervous system. I didn't just twitch my right eye; I forced both of my eyelids to flutter rapidly, three times, four times, tears finally squeezing past my lashes and tracking down my bruised temples.
"She's alive!" Sarah gasped, dropping to her knees beside the bed to wipe my tears away. "She's fully conscious! Doctor Vance, look at the EEG monitor! Her alpha waves are spiking!"
"Get out," Julian commanded, his tone dropping to a chilling whisper.
"You can't do this, Julian!" Diane pleaded, her voice turning pathetic, laced with a desperation I had never heard before. "Please... Cole is dying in the next room! His liver is failing! If we don't transfer compatible tissue from Eliza, he won't survive the night! She’s his sister!"
Julian turned slowly toward her. I could hear the rustle of his heavy coat as he squared his shoulders.
"Cole is not her brother," Julian said, each word hitting like a sledgehammer. "Cole is the son you had with Victor while I was rotting in a Russian gulag, thinking you were waiting for me. And as for Cole's liver... he destroyed it himself through three years of heavy narcotics use and systematic self-poisoning. My daughter will not give a single drop of her blood to save the monster who tried to crush her against a truck."
"He didn't mean to!" Diane sobbed. "It was an accident! The roads were wet!"
"The dashcam footage from the semi-truck has already been retrieved by my security team, Diane," Julian replied smoothly. "It clearly shows Cole looking directly at Eliza, reaching across the console, unbuckling her seatbelt, and jerking the steering wheel into the oncoming lane. It was premeditated attempted murder. And the federal marshals waiting outside Bay 3 are currently placing Cole under arrest the second he wakes up from anesthesia."
A sharp, breathless scream tore from my mother's throat. It was the sound of a woman watching her golden pedestal collapse into jagged, unforgiving pieces.
"Take them out," Julian ordered.
Heavy footsteps echoed as federal marshals stepped into the room.
"Victor and Diane Hartwell, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and obstruction of justice," a deep voice announced. "You have the right to remain silent..."
"This is a mistake!" Victor bellowed, his voice receding down the hallway as he was forcibly marched away. "Do you know who I am?! I am Victor Hartwell! I control this city!"
"You controlled a illusion, Victor," Julian called after him softly. "And tonight, the illusion burned down."
The trauma room fell into a profound, heavy quiet. The heavy doors swung closed, blocking out the frantic alarms of the emergency ward. The only sounds remaining were the steady, mechanical rhythm of my ventilator and the soft, gentle rustle of Julian pulling a chair up to the side of my bed.
He sat down, wrapping both of his massive, warm hands around my ice-cold fingers.
"I'm sorry it took me twenty-eight years to find you, Eliza," he whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, heavy sorrow that no fake father could ever imitate. "I didn't know you existed until six months ago, when my intelligence network pulled the records from the clinic in Zurich where Diane gave birth. They hid you from me. They raised you in a house of snakes. But I swear to you on my life... no one will ever hurt you again."

I squeezed his thumb with the tiniest fraction of strength in my right hand.
Julian let out a wet, shaky laugh, pressing his forehead against my bruised knuckles. "That's my girl. Rest now, little bird. Papa is holding the door."
