Chapter 5 - The Empire Reclaimed

The morning sun flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Park Avenue penthouse, casting golden light across the crisp white sheets of the master bed.

I woke up at seven o'clock, feeling more rested and clear-headed than I had in years.

I washed my face in the luxurious marble bathroom, pulled on a plush white silk robe provided in the closet, and walked out into the main living area.

The rich aroma of freshly brewed Kona coffee and warm toasted pastries filled the air.

Sebastian was sitting at the massive glass dining table, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned, reviewing documents on a sleek tablet while sipping from a dark ceramic mug.

Beside him sat a tall, sharp-looking woman in a navy suit carrying a leather briefcase—his head of global public relations, Sarah Vance.

When I entered the room, Sebastian immediately set his tablet down and stood up, his eyes lighting up with that same mesmerizing warmth.

“Good morning, Victoria,” he said smoothly, walking over to pull out a chair for me at the table. “How did you sleep?”

“Better than I have in months,” I admitted, smiling as I sat down.

Sarah bowed her head respectfully toward me. “Good morning, Mrs. Sterling. I apologize for intruding so early, but we have several pressing press updates that require your attention.”

Sebastian poured me a fresh cup of coffee, setting it gently in front of me along with a small silver pitcher of cream.

“What kind of press updates?” I asked, taking a sip of the rich coffee.

Sarah opened her leather folder, laying out three major New York daily newspapers and pointing to her tablet screen.

The cover of the New York Post featured a stunning, high-resolution photograph of Sebastian and me leaving the church yesterday, smiling radiant under the stone archway.

The headline read in bold black ink: THE REAL NEW YORK FAIRY TALE: STERLING MARRIES HIS MUSE IN CATHEDRAL SHOCKER.

Secondary articles detailed the absolute disgrace of Ryan Miller and Danielle Reed, exposing Ryan’s corporate client losses and Danielle’s stolen dress scandal.

“The narrative is completely in our favor, Mrs. Sterling,” Sarah explained with a sharp, professional smile. “The public views you as an absolute icon of grace, dignity, and strength. Your sister and ex-fiancé have been universally condemned across all social media platforms.”

Before I could reply, my personal smartphone, which was sitting on the corner of the table, began buzzing violently.

It was a text message from my father.

I picked up the phone and opened the thread.

Vicki, please. Your mother is inconsolable. Danielle has locked herself in her room, and Ryan’s firm just placed him on administrative leave following the public backlash. They are begging you to release a public statement saying it was all a staged performance to clear their names. Please think of your sister's baby.

I stared at the message on the screen, feeling a cold, clean detachment.

Six months ago, I would have panicked. I would have felt immense guilt. I would have crafted a polite, accommodating statement to save my family from the consequences of their own appalling actions.

I set the phone flat on the glass table.

I looked up at Sebastian, who was watching me silently, waiting for my decision, giving me complete autonomy over my life.

“Sarah,” I said, turning my gaze to the head of public relations.

“Yes, Mrs. Sterling?”

“I want a formal press release drafted by nine o'clock,” I stated, my voice smooth, clear, and unyielding. “State clearly that Mr. Sebastian Sterling and I were legally wed yesterday afternoon in a private, joyous ceremony. State that any business entities or individuals attempting to use my name, my reputation, or my past relationships for financial or social gain will face immediate, aggressive legal action from the Sterling legal team.”

Sarah’s eyes sparkled with fierce professional delight. “Consider it done, Mrs. Sterling.”

I picked up my smartphone, opened my father’s text thread, and typed a final, brief response:

Actions have consequences, Dad. Tell Danielle to spend her energy preparing to be a mother instead of trying to live my life. Do not contact me again until you are ready to apologize for the last twenty-eight years.

I hit send, then permanently blocked his number, my mother’s number, Danielle’s number, and Ryan’s number.

A profound, incredible lightness filled my chest. The heavy chains of obligation, guilt, and quiet endurance that had bound me to my past were shattered forever.

Sarah gathered her files, bowed politely, and exited the penthouse through the private elevator, leaving us alone in the quiet, sunlit room.

Sebastian walked slowly over to my chair, resting his hands on the high glass back, leaning down close to my ear.

“You handled that with absolute perfection, my queen,” he whispered, his deep voice sending an intoxicating warmth through my entire body.

I turned my head, looking up into his calm, striking gray eyes.

“I had a very good teacher,” I replied softly, reaching up to gently trace the lapel of his crisp white shirt.

Sebastian reached down, wrapping his hands under my arms, effortlessly lifting me up from the chair. I wrapped my legs naturally around his waist as he pulled me tight against his chest, his broad arms supporting me with absolute security.

He carried me over to the massive floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the endless, shining expanse of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline stretching toward the horizon.

“The world is yours now, Victoria,” Sebastian murmured, his lips resting softly against the sensitive skin of my neck, making me gasp softly. “Where do you want to start?”

I looked out over the glorious, golden city—the city where I had once been pushed into the shadows, but where I now stood at the very top of the world.

May you like

I turned my face toward him, meeting his dark, intense gray eyes, and wrapped my arms tightly around his neck.

“Let’s start right here,” I whispered, leaning in to press my lips against his in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our future forever.
