Chapter 4 - THE BLOODLINE SURGES

The sound of distant gunfire rattled the heavy glass windows of the suite thirty minutes after Alessandro left.
I stood in front of the locked mahogany door, my heart pounding against my chest like a trapped bird. I had pulled Emma into the master bedroom, hiding her inside the spacious walk-in closet wrapped in thick blankets, with Mr. Bunny tucked firmly under her arm.
"Stay here, sweetie," I had whispered to her, kissing her forehead. "Mommy will be right outside."
"Is the bad lady coming back?" Emma had asked, her big brown eyes wide with fear.
"No," I promised her, tears stinging my eyes. "No one is ever going to hurt you again."
Outside the suite, the commotion grew louder. Shouting voices, the heavy thump of footsteps, and the sharp crack of high-caliber rounds echoed through the grand marble corridors of the east wing.
The Romanos were desperate. With Marco captured and their assets being frozen, Dominic Romano was making a last-ditch attempt to storm the estate and take hostages to bargain for his family’s survival.
Suddenly, a heavy thud slammed against the outer suite door.
I gasped, backing away from the entrance, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the nearby side table with both hands. I didn't know how to fight, but I was a mother, and I would tear down anyone who tried to step through that door to reach my daughter.
"Break it down!" a rough, gravelly voice barked from the hallway. "The girl and the kid are inside! Get them before Moretti sweeps the courtyard!"
Boom!
The lock splintered. The double doors burst inward, showering the marble entryway with shards of polished wood.
Three men in tactical gear stepped into the room, their assault rifles raised. Leading them was a tall, silver-haired man with a cruel, narrow face—Dominic Romano. His suit was spattered with mud and blood, his eyes wild with frantic desperation.
"Check the bedrooms!" Dominic shouted to his men. "Move!"
He turned his head and spotted me standing in the center of the sitting room, holding the brass candlestick like a club.
Dominic let out a harsh, rasping laugh. "Well, well. Look at the little princess. Twenty-seven years hiding like a rat in the sewers, and now you think you're royalty?"
"Get out of my room," I said, my voice shaking, but my grip on the heavy brass weapon tightening.
"You're coming with me, girl," Dominic snarled, taking a heavy step toward me, reaching out his thick, leather-gloved hand to grab my hair. "Your brother wiped out my family's accounts tonight. You're the only bargaining chip I have left to buy our way out of the country."
He lunged forward.
Instinct took over. I didn't think; I didn't hesitate. All the years of silent endurance, all the pain of being pushed around, dismissed, and humiliated flared into a blinding inferno of rage inside my chest.
I swung the heavy brass candlestick with all the strength in my body.
CRACK!
The heavy metal caught Dominic full across the side of his jaw. The force of the blow shattered his cheekbone, sending him stumbling sideways into the glass coffee table, crashing through the crystal surface in a shower of sharp fragments.
He screamed in pain, clutching his broken face, blood spurting through his fingers. "You crazy bitch!" he howled, trying to scramble to his feet.
Before his two tactical guards could turn their weapons on me, a thunderous blast filled the hallway.
BANG! BANG!
Both guards collapsed instantly to the floor, their weapons clattering uselessly against the marble.
Alessandro stepped through the shattered doorway, holding his silver handgun, smoke rising from the barrel. His white shirt was soaked in rain and spattered with blood, his face a cold mask of absolute violence.
He didn't even look at the fallen guards. He walked directly toward Dominic, who was struggling on the glass-strewn floor, bleeding profusely from his jaw.
Alessandro grabbed Dominic by the collar, dragging him up until his feet barely touched the ground, pinning him brutally against the wall.
"You broke into my house," Alessandro whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "You pointed a gun at my sister."
"Alessandro... wait..." Dominic choked out, blood leaking from his mouth. "We can... we can make a deal..."
"The time for deals ended thirty years ago," Alessandro said.
He shoved Dominic violently toward two Moretti lieutenants who had just rushed into the room. "Take him down to the basement with his brother. Make sure they both watch as every single Romano business in the city is burned to the ground."
The lieutenants dragged the screaming, bleeding man out of the room, leaving the suite in quiet ruin.
Alessandro stood in the center of the shattered room, his breathing heavy, his weapon lowered. He turned his head slowly to look at me. His eyes swept over the shattered coffee table, the bent brass candlestick in my hands, and the blood on the floor.
A slow, proud smirk spread across his carved jaw.
"The brass candlestick?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
I lowered the heavy metal stand, my hands trembling violently as the adrenaline began to leave my system. "It was... the heaviest thing in the room."
Alessandro chuckled—a deep, low sound that broke the oppressive tension in the space. He holstered his weapon, walked over to me, and gently took the candlestick from my hands, setting it aside.
"You really are a Moretti," he murmured, his dark eyes filled with fierce pride. "My mother would have been proud of that swing."
From the closet in the bedroom, a tiny voice called out timidly. "Mommy?"
I didn't wait. I turned and ran into the bedroom, pulling Emma out of the closet and holding her tightly against my chest. She wrapped her small arms around my neck, pressing her face against my shoulder, her little gray rabbit still held tight in her hand.
Alessandro walked into the bedroom, stopping at the doorway. He looked at us—at his sister and his niece—and for the first time, the cold, terrifying don of New York looked completely whole.
"It's over, Clara," he said softly. "The Romanos are gone. No one will ever threaten you again."
May you like
"Is it safe?" I asked, looking up at him through my tears.
"It is safe," Alessandro promised, stepping forward and placing a warm, heavy hand on top of Emma's head. "This house is yours. This empire is yours. And tomorrow, we show the world who you really are."
