Chapter 9 - The Golden Locket

Three weeks later.

The autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of gold, orange, and crimson across the rolling hills of the Long Island estate.

The dark, suffocating shadow that had hung over the mansion for months was completely gone. The house was filled with light, music, and the sweet scent of home-cooked Italian food.

In the grand kitchen, the elderly head cook, Rosa, was teaching Lily how to roll homemade gnocchi dough across a ridged wooden board. Flour dusted Lily’s cheek, and her small apron was covered in white spots, but her laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged room like music.

Dominic stood in the doorway of the kitchen, leaning against the frame, holding a mug of dark coffee.

He was wearing a simple black sweater and trousers—no guns, no tactical vests, no cold masks. His amber eyes were soft, warm, and filled with a peace he hadn't known in years.

Lily looked up from her dough, noticing her father standing there.

"Daddy! Look!" Lily held up a perfectly shaped piece of gnocchi, beaming with pride. "Rosa said I'm a natural!"

Dominic let out a low, warm laugh—a real laugh that came straight from his chest.

"She's right, Principessa," Dominic said, walking over to the counter. He reached out with a napkin, gently wiping the flour from her nose. "You're better at it than your uncle Marco ever was."

Lily’s smile softened slightly, but there was no fear in her eyes at the mention of the past. The nightmare was over. The dark basement was a distant memory, washed away by the warmth of her father's love.

Dominic reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

"I have something for you," Dominic said softly.

Lily wiped her floury hands on her apron and took the velvet box. She opened it carefully.

Inside rested the heart-shaped gold locket—the same locket Dominic had held at her false grave on that rainy afternoon in St. Jude’s Cemetery.

It had been polished, the mud and scratches removed, shining like pure gold in the bright kitchen sunlight.

Lily lifted the locket from the velvet casing. She opened the small heart clasp.

Inside, on the left side, was the original picture of her smiling as an eleven-year-old child. On the right side was a new picture—a picture taken last week of Dominic and Lily standing together on the balcony of his study, both of them smiling warmly into the camera.

Tears welled up in Lily’s brown eyes, but she smiled radiantly.

"You found it," Lily whispered.

"I picked it up off the gravestone the night I took down Marco," Dominic murmured, leaning down to clasp the gold chain around her neck. "It belongs right here."

The small heart locket rested gently against Lily’s chest, warm against her sweater.

Dominic pulled her into a warm, broad hug, lifting her off the stool, holding her small body tight against his chest.

"I love you, Daddy," Lily whispered into his ear.

"I love you more than life itself, my little girl," Dominic replied softly. "Always."
