Chapter 9 - THE CROWN OF ROSES

As the sun began to rise over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in glorious shades of gold, amber, and deep crimson, Damian returned to his estate.

The rain had stopped. The air was crisp, clean, and smelled of fresh spring earth.

Damian didn't go to his study. He didn't go to his private bedroom. He walked straight to the main house’s master guest suite, where Rosalind had moved Elena for the night following the incident at the carriage house.

He pushed the heavy mahogany doors open softly.

Elena was sitting on the edge of the vast, silk-covered bed, wrapped in a plush white robe. She looked clean, safe, and unharmed, though her silver eyes held a faint trace of lingering shock.

When she saw Damian standing in the doorway—his suit jacket removed, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his dark hair messy—her face lit up with an expression of profound, overwhelming joy.

"Damian," she whispered, standing up immediately.

Damian stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. He walked across the soft rug, stopping right in front of her.

"Is it over?" she asked softly, looking up into his dark, tired eyes.

"It's over," Damian said, his voice dropping into a tender, velvet cadence. "Jimmy Russo is gone. His men are gone. The Westside is ours. No one will ever threaten you again, Elena. Never."

Elena looked at this giant, dangerous man—the man who had shattered a mob boss's face, destroyed an empire, and risked his entire life's work just to keep her safe.

Tears of pure, overwhelming emotion filled her silver eyes.

"You burned an entire city for me," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Why, Damian? Why do you care so much about a girl who used to wipe your desk?"

Damian reached out, his large, warm hands gently taking her soft face in his palms, his thumbs brushing away the tears on her cheeks.

"Because the first day you walked into my study," Damian murmured, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that made her breath hitch, "I saw a woman with more grace, courage, and beauty than anyone I had ever met in my life. And when I saw those bruises on your wrists, I knew my life would never have meaning again unless I spent every day protecting you."

Elena gasped softly. She reached up, placing her small hands over his wrists—not to hide bruises, but to pull his hands closer to her heart.

"Damian," she whispered softly, her heart beating wildly against her chest. "I don't want to be protected from a distance anymore. I want to be with you."

Damian stared at her, his heart pounding like a war drum against his ribs.

Slowly, gently, he leaned down.

Their lips met in a sweet, tender, breathtaking kiss that seemed to erase every memory of pain, violence, and terror they had ever known. Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the safety, warmth, and profound love of the man who had fought the world for her.

Damian wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her gently off her feet, holding her against his heart as if she were the most precious treasure in existence.
