Chapter 4 - The Dark Hour

The opportunity came three days later.
It was a Thursday. I was scheduled to work the late shift at the medical clinic, which meant I wouldn't be home until eight-thirty in the evening. Usually, Ryan picked Lily up from her after-school care at five, brought her home, fed her dinner, and oversaw her bedtime routine until I arrived.
This was his window. The quiet, uninterrupted hours where he believed he was absolute master of the house.
At 5:15 p.m., I sat in my car in the parking lot of a grocery store two miles away from our house. The engine was idling. On the passenger seat beside me rested my smartphone, mounted on a small dashboard stand, its screen glowing in the fading twilight.
I opened the encrypted surveillance app.
The screen split into three feeds.
The living room feed showed Ryan walking in through the front door, carrying his briefcase and holding Lily’s hand. Lily looked small, her head lowered, her back rigid. Ryan set his briefcase down, took off his coat, and knelt beside her.
Even without sound on the feed, I could see his wide, pleasant smile. He stroked her hair. She pulled back slightly, but he caught her chin with his thumb and forefinger, holding her face steady, speaking to her with that calm, measured demeanor that had once deceived me so completely.
My chest constricted so tightly I could barely draw breath. My thumb hovered over the record button on the screen.
Ryan stood up, walked into the kitchen, and returned a moment later with a glass of juice for her. He set it on the coffee table, then walked up the stairs toward the second floor.
A minute later, the camera feed in the master bathroom flickered to life as the motion sensors triggered.
Ryan walked into the frame.
He didn't look around. He walked straight to the clawfoot tub. He leaned down, turned the heavy brass faucets, and began filling the tub.
On the screen, I watched him reach into his pocket, pull out a small blue bottle of bath salts, and pour them into the cascading water. He tested the water temperature with his wrist, his face entirely expressionless. The warm, loving husband was completely gone. In his place was a cold, methodical predator preparing an instrument of torture.
He stepped out of the bathroom and walked down the hallway toward Lily’s room.
My heart was beating so violently against my ribs I thought it would crack them. Tears of pure, unadulterated fury streamed down my face. I hit the red RECORD button on my phone screen.
On the monitor, Ryan reappeared in the bathroom doorway.
He was dragging Lily by her upper arm.
She was fighting him. Her tiny feet were skidding across the white tiles, her mouth open in what I knew was a silent, terrified scream. She was weeping, clutching at the doorframe, trying with every ounce of her six-year-old strength to resist him.
Ryan didn't shout. He didn't lose his temper. His expression remained terrifyingly blank.
He pulled her into the center of the bathroom, grabbed both of her arms, and pinned them behind her back with one large hand. With his free hand, he gripped the back of her small head, forcing her down toward the filled tub.
"NO!" I screamed inside my empty car, my fists slamming against the steering wheel. "NO! YOU MONSTER!"
On the screen, he forced her face down toward the surface of the water, holding her just inches above it, speaking harsh, silent words into her ear as she thrashing wildly in his grip.
I had seen enough.

I didn't wait for him to submerge her. I had the footage. I had the undisputed, horrific truth recorded in high definition on a secure cloud server.
I put the car in drive, slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, and drove like a maniac through the evening traffic toward our home.
