PART 2: THE SECRET HIDDEN IN THE BLANKET

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The baby continued crying softly in my arms.
Lily stood beside me, frozen.
And Daniel stared at the piece of paper like it was something dangerous.
Like it was a weapon pointed directly at him.
“Daniel…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“What does this mean?”
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not worry.
Not confusion.
Real fear.
“I don’t know.”
The answer came too quickly.
Too perfectly.
I studied his face.
Ten years of marriage taught me every little expression.
The way he smiled when he was lying.
The way his eyes moved when he was hiding something.
The way his voice changed when he was scared.
And right now…
He was hiding something.
“Mommy…”
Lily grabbed my hand.
Her little fingers were cold.
“Daddy did put the baby there.”
My heart broke.
Not because I believed her completely.
But because my daughter believed it.
Children don’t make accusations like that without a reason.
Especially against their own father.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Lily, sweetheart, you’re confused.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I saw you.”
“Lily…”
“You were outside.”
She pointed toward the back door.
“You were holding him.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Do you really believe her?”
The question hurt.
Because it wasn’t about Lily.
It was about me.
About whether I trusted him.
And suddenly, I wasn’t sure.
“I don’t know what I believe right now.”
The words came out quietly.
But they hit him.
His face changed.
For years, Daniel had been the person I depended on.
The person who fixed problems.
The person who made everything feel safe.
But now I was standing in my kitchen holding a newborn baby, reading a note accusing him of something terrible.
And the worst part was…
A small part of me believed it.
The ambulance arrived minutes later.
Paramedics rushed inside.
They checked the baby immediately.
His temperature was dangerously low.
He was dehydrated.
But alive.
The entire time, Daniel stayed silent.
Too silent.
Most people would be panicking.
Asking questions.
Trying to help.
But he kept watching the baby.
Not with concern.
With worry.
Like he was afraid of what the baby could reveal.
The paramedic looked at me.
“Does this child belong to anyone you know?”
I opened my mouth.
Before I could answer, Daniel said:
“No.”
Too fast.
The paramedic looked at him.
“No?”
Daniel cleared his throat.
“I mean, we don’t know.”
Something about the way he corrected himself made my stomach tighten.
After they carried the baby outside, an officer remained behind.
He took notes.
“Can you tell me exactly what happened?”
I looked at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
My husband avoided my eyes.
So I told the truth.
“My daughter found him near the barn.”
The officer nodded.
“And the note?”
I handed it over.
He read it carefully.
His expression changed slightly.
“Mr. Daniel?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Yes?”
“Do you know who wrote this?”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
The officer looked at him.
“Are you sure?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then the officer asked:
“Mr. Daniel, do you have any connection to a newborn child?”
The silence was unbearable.
I looked at my husband.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Praying for a simple explanation.
Maybe a misunderstanding.
Maybe a mistake.
But Daniel said nothing.
And that silence felt like an answer.
Later that afternoon, the baby was taken to the hospital.
I followed.
Lily came with me.
Daniel drove separately.
I didn’t want to sit beside him.
Not after everything.
Not after seeing the fear in his eyes.
At the hospital, doctors examined the baby.
They found something.
A small birthmark.
A medical bracelet hidden under the blanket.
And a name.
The nurse walked toward me slowly.
“Mrs. Carter?”
I turned.
“Yes?”
She held a file.
“We need to ask you something.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
The nurse looked at the papers.
“This baby may be connected to your family.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
She lowered her voice.
“The baby’s mother listed an emergency contact.”
My heart started racing.
“Who?”
The nurse looked at me.
Then said:
“Daniel Carter.”
The world stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
Daniel.
My husband.
The man standing ten feet away pretending not to know anything.
I turned toward him.
His face had lost all color.
“Daniel…”
He looked at me.
And this time, he didn’t deny it.
Because he knew.
The truth had already arrived.
The nurse continued.
“The mother’s name is Rebecca Hayes.”
I stared.
I didn’t recognize the name.
But Daniel did.
His reaction was immediate.
A flash of panic.
Then anger.
“She’s lying.”
The nurse stepped back.
“Sir?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She’s lying. She’s trying to destroy my family.”
But his voice wasn’t confident.
It was desperate.
I looked at him.
“Who is Rebecca?”
He didn’t answer.
That was when I knew.
There was a whole part of my husband’s life I had never seen.
A hidden chapter.
A secret.
And now it had arrived at my doorstep.
Literally.
With a newborn baby.
My daughter stepped closer.
She looked up at Daniel.
And whispered:
“Daddy…”
Her voice broke.
“Why did you leave him?”
Daniel looked at her.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked guilty.
