Chapter 2 - The Splitting of the Seams

The words hung in the warm May air, heavy and impossible to retrieve.
Mr. Harris, the school principal, came hurrying over from the raffle booth. He was still holding the wireless microphone in his hand, the small red power light blinking like a warning beacon. "What is going on over here? Is there a problem, ladies?"
Melissa didn't look at him. Her entire focus had narrowed onto Lily. The polite, upper-class mask she had worn so effortlessly was beginning to slide, revealing a frantic, wild-eyed desperation underneath.
"The child is delusional!" Melissa said quickly, her voice high and strained. "She’s traumatized by her mother's abandonment. I am her legal guardian now. I am taking her home immediately."
She reached down, her hands wrapping around the purple backpack straps with a violent force, trying to wrench the bag away from Lily's chest.
"No!" Lily screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, primal terror.
She pulled back with all her tiny strength. The sudden, desperate movement was too much for the old, frayed metal zipper of the backpack. With a loud, sharp rrip, the metal teeth parted, and the seam of the bag tore completely open.
Everything inside spilled out onto the gray concrete of the courtyard.
A cracked plastic pencil case with cartoon kittens on it. A half-empty, crumpled bottle of water. Two crinkled spelling worksheets covered in red checkmarks. A small, worn stuffed rabbit with one blue button eye missing. A child's crayon drawing of a smiling woman with long brown hair, the word MOMMY written in shaky, colorful block letters at the top.
And then, there was the last item.
It was a heavy, brick-shaped bundle, roughly the size of a shoebox, wrapped entirely in layers of thick, silver duct tape.
As the bundle hit the ground, a fresh, concentrated wave of the metallic, rotten odor erupted into the air. It was so intense, so physically offensive, that several parents standing nearby immediately gagged, covering their noses and mouths with their hands.
A mother near the cupcake table let out a high-pitched, horrified scream. Someone else dropped a plastic tray of chocolate cupcakes, the dark frosting smearing across the concrete like dirt.
Melissa lunged forward, her red nails clawing at the concrete as she tried to grab the silver bundle.
Before my brain could register the danger, my hand shot out. I grabbed Melissa's wrist, my fingers locking around her cold skin. "Don't touch it."
Melissa twisted her arm with a terrifying, unnatural strength. She swung her free hand, slapping me across the face with a force that sent me sprawling backward onto the hard ground. My cheek flashed with a blinding, white-hot pain, and my glasses flew off my face, clattering against the school wall.
"Mom!" Grace shrieked, throwing her arms around me as I struggled to sit up.
"Hey! Get off her!" a loud voice roared.
Mark Peterson, a beefy father who had been volunteering at the dunk tank, ran forward. Still dripping wet in his swim trunks and a t-shirt, he threw his massive frame between Melissa and the silver bundle, his arms spread wide to keep her back.
"Call 911!" I screamed, my voice raw as I pointed at the duct-taped package. "Call the police right now!"
In an instant, dozens of smartphones were pulled from pockets, their screens lighting up as parents dialed the emergency number.
Melissa stopped fighting.
The sudden stillness of her body was more terrifying than her physical violence. She stood perfectly upright, her expensive sunglasses slightly crooked on her nose, her breathing deep and even. She looked down at me, and then at the crowd of parents surrounding her, her lips curling into a cold, mocking smile.
"You have absolutely no idea what you’ve just done," she whispered, her voice chillingly calm. "You've ruined everything."
I ignored her, dragging myself over to where Lily was kneeling. The little girl was staring at the silver bundle on the concrete, her tiny body shaking so violently I was afraid she would go into shock.
I reached out, gently placing my hands on her shoulders, my voice trembling as I asked the question that was tearing through my mind.
"Lily... sweetheart. Where is your mother?"
May you like
Lily lifted her tear-filled blue eyes to meet mine, and in a tiny, broken whisper, she delivered the final blow.
"In the freezer."
