Chapter 4 - The Unmasking in the Dark

3:14 AM.
The house was dead silent.
I lay awake under the covers of my bed, staring at the dark ceiling, my heart hammering against my chest like a sledgehammer. Beside my pillow, my smartphone lay face down, its screen dimly glowing with the active feed from the hidden camera app.
Suddenly, a quiet buzz vibrated against the mattress.
Motion detected in Master Closet.
My hands trembled violently as I lifted the phone and tapped the screen.
The infrared night-vision feed flickered to life in sharp, high-definition black-and-white.
On the screen, the wooden panel at the back of the walk-in closet was slowly, silently pulling inward.
A man’s hand emerged from the dark void behind the drywall—a hand wearing a silver wedding band identical to the one I had placed on Nolan's finger nine years ago.
Slowly, Nolan crawled out from behind the wall.
He was wearing dark sweatpants, a grey hoodie, and a thick pair of socks. His beard was long, unkempt, and his face was pale from two months without sunlight. He held a small LED flashlight between his teeth and a burner phone in his right hand.
I watched through the live screen as he stepped into my closet, stretched his back with a soft groan, and pulled his phone to his ear.
He dialed a number. A few seconds later, he spoke in a low, raspy whisper that was picked up clearly by the camera’s high-sensitivity microphone:
"Evelyn? It's me," Nolan whispered into the phone, standing right behind my closet door. "Did she sign the papers?"
A faint, tinny voice echoed from his speaker. “No. The girl is being stubborn. She wants a lawyer.”
Nolan let out an irritated sigh, rubbing his forehead. "Damn it, Mom. Richard is pressing me. The SEC subpoenas are hitting the Apex main office on Friday. We need Clara’s signature on the liability transfer before the federal agents audit the Naperville property assets."
“Don't panic, Nolan,” Evelyn’s voice replied through the phone. “We execute Plan B tomorrow night. Once you leave the crawlspace and stage the forced entry, we report you as an abducted corporate whistleblower. Clara’s name is on the secondary LLC accounts where the missing eight million was routed. The police will arrest her before sunrise.”
Nolan went quiet for a second. "What about Lacey?"
“I will take temporary custody of Lacey once Clara is remanded into federal custody,” Evelyn said coldly. “She’ll be raised properly, far away from that girl’s family.”
Nolan nodded into the dark. "Okay. I'll stay behind the wall until 4:00 AM tomorrow night. Just make sure Richard has the private jet ready at the regional airfield."

"Okay, Nolan," I said out loud.
I didn't say it into the phone. I said it standing right in the doorway of the walk-in closet.
