Chapter 6 - The Awakening

At 8:30 PM that evening, the heavy silence of Room 308 was broken by a soft, feeble rustle of bedsheets.
I immediately stood up from my chair, dropping to my knees beside Lily’s hospital bed. "Lily-bug?"
Her long, dark eyelashes fluttered weakly against her pale cheeks. She let out a soft, tiny sigh, her small fingers twitching against the white hospital blanket.
Slowly, her dark brown eyes opened, cloudy and unfocused at first, looking around the bright, monitor-filled room.
"Grandpa...?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
Tears spilled freely down my cheeks as I took her tiny, cold hand into both of my worn, calloused palms, kissing her knuckles gently. "I'm right here, sweetie. Grandpa's right here. You're safe. You're in the hospital, and the doctors took care of you."
Noah ran over from his corner armchair, leaning over the bed rail, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated joy. "Lily! Lily, you woke up!"
Lily looked at her older brother, a faint, fragile smile breaking through her pale lips. "Noah... did... did Dad let you out of the closet?"
Noah wiped a tear from his eye, shaking his head firmly. "Grandpa let me out, Lily. Grandpa came and broke the lock."
"Grandpa..." Lily turned her small head toward me, her eyes filling with big, heavy tears. "I was so scared... Dad gave me those green pills... they made my throat burn, and then my legs stopped working... I tried to get water, but everything went black..."
"Shh, baby. Don't think about that," I sobbed, resting my forehead gently against her arm. "It's over. That monster is never, ever going to touch you again. I swear it to you."
A few minutes later, Sarah Jenkins, the DCS caseworker, stepped into the room with a set of legal documents. She looked at Lily with a warm, relieved smile, then motioned for me to step into the adjoining room.
"Mr. Bennett," Jenkins said, handing me a pen and a document bearing the seal of the Knox County Juvenile Court. "Based on the severe criminal charges filed against Eric and Karen Bennett, the family court judge has signed an emergency ex-parte order."
She pointed to the execution line at the bottom of the page.
"This order completely revokes all parental rights for Eric and Karen Bennett, granting you full, permanent emergency legal and physical custody of both Lily and Noah Bennett."
I picked up the pen. My hand didn't shake. My fingers held the plastic casing with the firm, unshakable grip of a man who had finally found his sole purpose in this life.
I signed my name clearly across the line: Walter Bennett, Legal Guardian.

I handed the paper back to Jenkins. "What happens now?"
"Now," Jenkins said softly, "you take your grandchildren home, Mr. Bennett. And we let the justice system deal with your son."
