PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE SMILE

Nobody moved.

Not even Aunt Linda.

The woman who had spent years controlling every room she entered was suddenly standing there without a single word.

My grandfather’s voice had changed everything.

Because everyone knew one thing about him.

He never spoke without knowing the truth.

And that scared Linda.

I looked between them, confused.

“What is going on?”

Nobody answered.

Emily was still standing beside me.

Her hand rested over her stomach.

Protecting our baby.

Even after everything, her first instinct was still to protect someone else.

That was the kind of person she was.

And that was exactly why Linda underestimated her.

My grandfather slowly walked into the kitchen.

He didn’t look at the rest of the family.

He only looked at Linda.

“You crossed a line today.”

Linda forced a laugh.

“Oh, please. You’re making this dramatic.”

Her confidence was returning.

“I was just correcting her.”

The room went silent again.

Correcting her.

That was what she called it.

Hitting a pregnant woman.

Humiliating her.

Trying to break her.

I felt my hands tighten into fists.

But Emily gently touched my arm.

A small warning.

Not yet.

She was waiting.

I didn’t understand why.

Not until my grandfather spoke again.

“Do you remember what you said to me last month?”

Linda’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

She knew exactly what he was talking about.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

My grandfather smiled sadly.

“That’s your problem, Linda.”

He looked around the room.

“You’ve spent so long lying that you don’t know when the truth is standing right in front of you.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Dad, what is happening?”

He looked at her.

“Your sister has been spreading rumors about Emily for months.”

Everyone looked at Linda.

She immediately shook her head.

“That’s ridiculous.”

But my grandfather continued.

“She told people Emily married him for money.”

My jaw dropped.

“What?”

I looked at Linda.

She didn’t deny it.

“She told people Emily was planning to take advantage of this family.”

My mother looked shocked.

“Linda…”

But Linda interrupted.

“She doesn’t belong here.”

The words came out cold.

And that was when something inside me broke.

Because Emily had spent years trying to belong.

She had attended every event.

She had been polite.

She had forgiven every insult.

And Linda still looked at her like she was nothing.

I stepped closer.

“You hit my wife because you don’t like her?”

Linda looked at me.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

My voice became harder.

“I understand perfectly.”

For the first time, Linda looked uncertain.

Then Emily spoke.

Quietly.

“Actually, I think she understands very well.”

Everyone turned.

Emily reached into her purse.

And pulled out her phone.

Linda’s expression changed immediately.

“What are you doing?”

Emily didn’t answer.

She unlocked the screen.

Then she pressed play.

A recording filled the kitchen.

Linda’s own voice.

Clear.

Angry.

“I don’t care if she’s pregnant. She needs to learn her place.”

Nobody breathed.

The recording continued.

“She thinks she can come in here and replace my position.”

A pause.

Then Linda’s voice again.

“I’ll make sure she leaves this family before that baby is born.”

My stomach dropped.

The entire room froze.

Because this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t a bad moment.

This was planned.

Linda stared at Emily.

“You recorded me?”

Emily looked at her.

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“You recorded yourself.”

Linda’s face turned pale.

Then I understood.

Emily hadn’t been quiet because she was weak.

She had been quiet because she was collecting the truth.

My wife looked at Linda.

“I knew you didn’t like me.”

She paused.

“But I never thought you would hate me enough to hurt my child.”

That sentence hit harder than any accusation.

Linda looked around the room.

Searching for someone to defend her.

Someone to support her.

But nobody moved.

Even her own family looked uncomfortable.

My father shook his head.

“Linda, what have you done?”

She suddenly became angry.

Because people like Linda don’t apologize when they lose control.

They attack.

“You all think she’s innocent?”

She pointed at Emily.

“You don’t know who she really is.”

Emily didn’t react.

Linda laughed bitterly.

“She’s been hiding something.”

That caught everyone’s attention.

My eyebrows tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

Linda smiled.

A desperate smile.

The kind of smile someone gives when they think they still have one last weapon.

“She hasn’t told you everything.”

She looked at me.

“Ask your wife why she really came into your life.”

The room became silent.

I looked at Emily.

My heart sank.

Because for the first time…

Emily looked nervous.

Not scared.

Not guilty.

Just nervous.

And that was enough to make me wonder.

“Emily?”

She looked at me.

Then at Linda.

A long silence passed.

Finally, Emily whispered:

“I was going to tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?”

She reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out an old envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“This.”

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“It’s the reason I never fought back.”

Nobody moved.

She slowly opened the envelope.

And pulled out a document.

The moment I saw the name printed at the top…

My entire world stopped.

Because the document was connected to my family.

To my grandfather.

To the company.

And to the secret Linda had been hiding for years.

Emily looked at me.

“I didn’t marry you because of your money.”

She took a breath.

“I married you because I was trying to protect you.”

And that was when everyone realized…

May you like

The quiet woman Linda had been attacking wasn’t powerless.

She had been the only person who knew the truth all along.
