Chapter 8 - The Silver Locket

The room was dead silent except for the low hum of the rain beating against the reinforced windowpanes.
I slowly reached beneath the lapel of Adrien’s jacket, my shaking fingers grasping the small, tarnished silver locket hanging from its delicate chain.
“I thought it was just a picture of my dog,” I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks as I looked at Adrien. “She told me never to open the back casing. She said it was fragile.”
Adrien stepped closer, his hands remarkably steady as he reached out and gently lifted the locket from my chest.
“May I?” he asked softly.
I nodded.
Using the small blade of a tactical pocketknife, Adrien carefully popped open the back seal of the silver heart.
Inside, tucked beneath a thin layer of protective plastic, wasn't a photograph or a keepsake.
It was a micro-SD card, no larger than a fingernail, gleaming beneath the soft yellow lights of the study.
Leo let out a long, low whistle from the doorway. “Mother of God... forty billion dollars of evidence sitting around a child’s neck for fourteen years.”
“Clara was a genius,” Adrien murmured, his eyes fixed on the tiny piece of plastic. “She hid the ultimate weapon against the most dangerous syndicate in the country in plain sight, on the person they would least suspect.”
“What do we do now?” I asked, looking up at Adrien. “Moretti wants me to bring it to Queens at sunrise. He’ll kill us both the moment he gets his hands on it.”
Adrien closed the locket, setting it gently back against my chest, his hand lingering for a moment against my collarbone.
“Moretti thinks he’s setting a trap,” Adrien said, his dark eyes ablaze with an unwavering, terrifying resolve. “He thinks he’s forcing me into a corner. He doesn't realize he’s given me the exact location of his primary stronghold.”
“You’re going to fight him?” I asked, panic rising in my chest. “He has dozens of men! He has the police in his pocket!”
“I have something better,” Adrien replied, turning to Leo. “Call Marco. Tell him to assemble every soldier, every tactical team, and every asset loyal to the Viscari family. We’re going to Queens.”
“Adrien,” I pleaded, grabbing his arm, my fingers digging into the fabric of his sleeve. “It’s too dangerous! You don't have to do this for me!”
Adrien turned to face me, his hands rising to gently frame my face, his thumb softly brushing away a tear from my cheek.
“Fourteen years ago, your mother sacrificed everything she had to make sure I lived to see this day,” Adrien whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it took my breath away. “I spent my entire life thinking I was alone in this dark city. I’m not doing this just because I owe your mother a debt, Lena.”
“Then why?” I whispered, searching his dark eyes.
“Because the moment you steeled yourself and stepped into my club, bleeding and broken, you became the only thing in this world I care about protecting,” he said softly.
May you like
He leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against mine, his warm breath fanning across my lips.
“You’re safe with me, Lena. Always.”
