Chapter 9 - The Federal Warrant

Thursday morning, 6:00 AM.

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon in Savannah, Georgia.

Inside a luxury suite at the historic Mansion on Forsyth Park hotel, Miles Vance sat at a desk surrounded by empty liquor bottles, frantically trying to log into his firm’s remote portal.

Screen message after screen message flashed red across his monitor:

[ACCESS DENIED — USER ACCOUNT SUSPENDED BY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.]

Miles slammed his laptop shut, his hands trembling violently, sweat dripping down his pale face. "No... no, no, no..."

He grabbed his cell phone and dialed his senior partner, Arthur Sterling.

The call went straight to voicemail:

"You have reached the office of Arthur Sterling. If you are calling regarding the ongoing internal forensic investigation into Vance, Sterling & Howell, please note that all corporate communications are currently being monitored by federal authorities."

Miles dropped his phone onto the desk. The glass screen shattered against the mahogany wood.

"Miles?" Monica’s trembling voice called out from the bedroom.

She stepped into the living room, wearing a hotel bathrobe, her face puffy and red from forty-eight hours of non-stop crying. She was holding her iPad, her hands shaking so hard she could barely hold it.

"Miles... my accounts are gone," Monica whimpered, her voice rising into an ugly, pathetic screech. "My Instagram is deleted! My TikTok is banned! All my brand deals canceled their payouts! The bank just froze my corporate debit card at the front desk!"

"Shut up, Monica!" Miles yelled, clutching his head in utter desperation. "Shut up about your fucking social media!"

"Don't you yell at me!" Monica shrieked, throwing the iPad at his chest. "Look at the news, Miles! Look at what your crazy sister did!"

Miles picked up the iPad. The front page of USA Today displayed a massive photograph of Zoe sitting triumphantly in her garden set, alongside a photo of Monica’s bleach-stained handbag closet.

The headline read: "FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OPENED INTO ATLANTA LAW FIRM FOLLOWING CHILD SABOTAGE INCIDENT."

Before Miles could even process the headline, a loud, thunderous boom echoed through the hotel suite door.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

"FEDERAL AGENTS! OPEN THE DOOR!" a voice boomed from the hallway.

Monica let out a high-pitched scream, backing away into the bedroom corner. "Miles! Oh my God, Miles! Who is that?!"

Miles stood frozen, his eyes wide with absolute, horrifying panic.

BOOM!

The heavy hotel door was forced open with a hydraulic ram, slamming against the interior wall with a deafening crash.

Eight federal agents wearing dark tactical vests marked FBI and IRS-CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION flooded into the suite, their sidearms drawn and pointed directly at Miles.

"Miles Vance! Keep your hands where we can see them! Step away from the desk!" the lead agent commanded, his voice sharp and absolute.

Miles slowly raised his shaking hands into the air, tears spilling down his pale, sweat-soaked cheeks. "I... I have a lawyer... I want my lawyer..."

An IRS special agent stepped forward, pulling a heavy set of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the Northern District of Georgia. You are charged with twelve counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and grand embezzlement."

The agent grabbed Miles’s arm, pulling it roughly behind his back, clicking the cold steel cuff around his wrist.

"Miles!" Monica shrieked, weeping hysterically from the bedroom doorway. "Miles, don't leave me! Tell them I didn't do anything!"

The lead FBI agent turned his gaze toward Monica, pulling a second official document from his vest pocket.

"Monica Vance?" the agent asked coldly.

Monica stammered, clutching her silk robe tight around her neck. "I... I'm just his wife! I didn't know anything about his law firm!"

"You are listed as the primary managing director of M&M Creative Media LLC," the agent read flatly. "You signed three consecutive years of fraudulent federal tax returns, knowingly receiving proceeds from stolen client escrow funds. You are under arrest as a co-conspirator to federal wire fraud and grand larceny."

"NOOOOO!" Monica screamed, kicking and clawing as two female federal agents stepped forward, grabbing her arms, pinning her against the wall, and snapping handcuffs around her manicured wrists. "MY BAGS! MY LIFE! THIS IS A MISTAKE! HANNAH DID THIS TO ME! HANNAH IS THE MONSTER!"

The agents didn't listen. They pulled Monica straight out of the hotel suite, her tear-stained face caught by three hotel guests who were filming the entire arrest on their smartphones from the hallway.
