PART 4: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE ATTACK

For the first time in eight years…

I slept with one eye open.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I finally understood the situation.

The attack on Toby was never random.

My father-in-law’s anger.

Jasper and Kyle’s violence.

Isabelle’s secrets.

They were all pieces of something much bigger.

And someone had been moving those pieces from the shadows.

The next morning, I received another message.

One word.

Come alone.

No location.

No explanation.

Just a set of coordinates.

A place I recognized immediately.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The same place where I had ended my old life.

The same place where I promised myself I would never return.

But now my son’s safety was at stake.

So I went.

When I arrived, the building was empty.

Dust covered the floor.

Old machines sat abandoned.

The air smelled like rust and rain.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

A man stepped out of the darkness.

And my entire body went still.

“Hello, Daniel.”

I stared.

Because I knew him.

Ethan Cross.

The one person I thought I had escaped forever.

Years ago, Ethan was my partner.

Not a friend.

Not exactly.

Someone who knew everything about me.

My skills.

My secrets.

My weaknesses.

Until he betrayed me.

Or at least…

That was what I believed.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“Still direct.”

I didn’t move.

“You hurt my son.”

His expression changed.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I warned you.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

He stepped closer.

“I tried to stop them.”

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“You think I would attack a child?”

I stayed silent.

Because the answer was complicated.

Ethan had done terrible things.

But there was one thing I remembered.

He had rules.

One of them:

Never involve children.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“The people around you aren’t who you think they are.”

I already knew that.

“Be specific.”

He handed me a file.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Financial records.

My hands tightened.

Because the name appeared everywhere.

Not my father-in-law.

Not Jasper.

Not Kyle.

Isabelle.

I stared.

“No.”

Ethan watched me carefully.

“She didn’t tell you everything.”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“She knew about the money.”

I looked up.

“What money?”

“Your father-in-law was bankrupt.”

The words hit me.

“He wasn’t angry because he hated you.”

“He was desperate.”

I flipped through the pages.

“He wanted access to Sterling’s assets.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain Toby.”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

A pause.

“Because Toby wasn’t the target.”

I looked at him.

“Then who?”

He answered quietly.

“You.”

The room became silent.

“They needed you angry.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because they knew the old Daniel would come back.”

My blood ran cold.

“They wanted to expose me.”

“Yes.”

“They wanted everyone to see who you really were.”

I looked down at the documents.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The attack wasn’t only about hurting Toby.

It was about forcing me to reveal myself.

The moment I used old connections.

The moment I acted like the man I used to be…

They could destroy me.

“They planned this.”

Ethan nodded.

“Your father-in-law was paid.”

“By who?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Ethan.”

He looked at me.

“The person funding everything…”

A pause.

“Was someone from your company.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“Someone close to you.”

I searched his face.

“Who?”

Before he could answer…

A sound came from behind us.

A phone ringing.

Ethan looked toward the doorway.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Surprise.

A woman stepped inside.

And when I saw her…

Everything inside me collapsed.

“Isabelle.”

My wife.

She walked toward us slowly.

Tears were already in her eyes.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because this was impossible.

“You knew.”

Her face broke.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?”

“You let our son get hurt.”

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know they would do that.”

I heard those words before.

But this time…

I didn’t believe them.

“You knew they planned something.”

She cried.

“Yes.”

The confession was quiet.

But devastating.

“Why?”

She looked at the ground.

“Because my father threatened me.”

“With what?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“With Toby.”

My entire body went cold.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate…”

She couldn’t finish.

But I understood.

They threatened her.

They used our son.

And she chose silence.

A terrible silence.

“How long?”

She looked at me.

“Six months.”

Six months.

My mind went blank.

For six months…

My wife lived beside me.

Shared a bed with me.

Smiled at me.

While knowing danger was coming.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I was scared.”

I stared at her.

“And I wasn’t?”

She cried.

“I know.”

“No, Isabelle.”

My voice broke.

“You don’t.”

The silence between us was heavier than anger.

Because this wasn’t just betrayal.

It was the loss of trust.

The foundation of everything.

Ethan spoke.

“There’s more.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed at the files.

“The attack failed.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“They wanted you to retaliate.”

“They wanted evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

His answer was quiet.

“That you’re still the same man you were.”

A chill went through me.

They weren’t trying to kill me.

They were trying to expose me.

They wanted the world to know Daniel Sinclair was back.

The dangerous man.

The man who solved problems in ways nobody could prove.

And they thought that would destroy me.

But they made one mistake.

They underestimated something.

I was no longer fighting for myself.

I was fighting for Toby.

I looked at Isabelle.

“You need to make a choice.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“Tell me everything.”

A pause.

“Or I walk away.”

Her face filled with fear.

Because she knew.

This was the last chance.

She took a deep breath.

Then she whispered:

“The person who planned everything…”

My heart stopped.

“Is someone you never suspected.”

“Someone who has been close to you from the beginning.”

I stared.

“Who?”

She looked at me.

And said the name.

May you like

The name that destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“Your father.”
