Chapter 6 - The Confession

Ethan finally took a step forward, his voice cracking violently as he spoke for the first time. “That’s not even the worst of it, Clara.”

I looked at him, seeing the immense weight of realization crushing his posture. He looked like a man who had realized he had traded a diamond for a piece of poisoned glass.

“When Dr. Aris called me with this information this morning,” Ethan whispered, his eyes finally moving to look at Lily, tears streaming down his face, “I went straight to the venue where the wedding was supposed to happen. Sienna was in the bridal suite, getting her makeup done.”

He swallowed hard, his chest heaving.

“I confronted her with the real records. I told her I knew she worked at the clinic. At first, she tried to deny it, crying and saying it was a mistake. But then, my lawyer arrived with the expedited DNA results from the lab.”

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper with a gold seal at the top. His hands shook so violently the paper rattled in the quiet room.

“The test results are 99.99% positive,” Ethan said, his voice breaking into a sob. “Lily is my daughter. She is mine, Clara. She is ours.”

He fell to his knees right there on the hard hospital floor, burying his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with deep, agonizing sobs.

“I’m so sorry,” he wept. “I’m so incredibly sorry, Clara. I was so blind. I was so obsessed with my career and my ego that I let her convince me that you were the enemy. I abandoned you. I abandoned my baby girl.”

My mother looked down at him, her expression a mix of lingering anger and profound pity. She looked at me, leaving the decision of how to handle this entirely in my hands.

I looked down at Lily, who was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the storm raging around her. I felt a profound sense of vindication, a massive weight lifting off my chest. I wasn't a liar. I wasn't an unfaithful wife. The truth had won.

But looking at Ethan crying on the floor, I didn't feel a sense of triumph. I just felt a deep, hollow sadness for the time we had lost, and a sharp, defensive maternal instinct to protect my daughter from the chaos he had brought into our lives.

“Get up, Ethan,” I said, my voice quiet but firm.

He slowly raised his head, his eyes red and swollen, and pushed himself to his feet, standing before me like a defendant awaiting sentencing.

“Why did she do it?” I asked, wanting to understand the final piece of the madness. “Why did she scream that the baby couldn't exist when you told her I gave birth?”

Ethan wiped his face with a trembling hand. “Because when she realized you were pregnant six months ago, right before our divorce was finalized, she panicked. She knew that if I found out you were carrying my child, I would never go through with the divorce. So, she took matters into her own hands.”

He took a deep breath, his face twisting with disgust.

“She told me that she had personally spoken to your doctor, and that you had suffered a miscarriage. But behind my back, she actually went to a private medical investigator. She paid someone to track your medical appointments, trying to find a way to stop the pregnancy. When she found out you were still healthy and nearing your due date, she realized her entire lie was about to unravel the moment the baby was born and looked like me.”

Ethan looked at the floor. “She screamed that the baby couldn't exist because she had convinced herself that her lies were foolproof. She thought she had successfully erased you from my life. Seeing Lily… seeing the truth physically lying in that bassinet… it completely broke her mind.”
