Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The moment Judge Higgins uttered those words, the two federal agents walked calmly down the center aisle of the courtroom.

Ethan turned his head, his face frozen in pure horror as he recognized the badges pinned to their lapels.

“Ethan Cole?” the lead agent asked, stopping at the defense table. “I’m Special Agent Davis with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Task Force. I have a warrant for your arrest.”

“What?” Ethan gasped, backing away until his knees hit the judge’s bench rail. “No! No, there’s been a mistake! This is a civil dispute! We just finished the civil hearing!”

“You are being charged under a federal indictment,” Agent Davis said calmly, pulling a folded document from his coat. “Charges include six counts of wire fraud, three counts of bank fraud, four counts of tax evasion, and one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments.”

Ms. Morales, his public defender, stepped back, raising her hands. “I am not representing him on federal criminal charges.”

“Ethan Cole, turn around and place your hands behind your back,” Agent Davis commanded.

“Claire!” Ethan screamed, turning toward me, his eyes wide with absolute, terrifying panic. “Claire, stop them! Tell them it’s wrong! Please! I’m Noah’s father! You can’t let them send me to prison! I’ll give you everything! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just stop them!”

I stood up slowly, resting my weight on my wooden cane. I walked over to the edge of the counsel table, standing just three feet away from him as Agent Davis pulled his arms behind his back and clicked the heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

I looked into the eyes of the man who had called me weak. The man who had called me emotional, useless, and pathetic.

“You gave me everything when you left me, Ethan,” I said softly, my voice calm, quiet, and crystal clear. “You gave me my freedom. You gave me my son. And you gave me the exact proof I needed to put you where you belong.”

“Claire! Please!” he sobbed, tears finally bursting from his eyes, pouring down his stubbled cheeks. “I loved you! I spent ten years with you!”

“You loved my money, Ethan,” I corrected gently. “And you loved the power I let you pretend to have. But the game is over now.”

Agent Davis grabbed Ethan by the shoulder and pulled him toward the door.

As he was dragged down the center aisle of the courtroom—his shoes dragging against the carpet, his head hanging low, sobbing hysterically in front of twenty reporters who were snapping photographs through the glass windows—I stood still, watching him go.

Bianca was facing twenty years in state prison for aggravated battery and assault. Ethan was facing thirty years in federal penitentiary for financial crimes.

The empire they had tried to build on my pain had collapsed into dust in less than seventy-two hours.

Marcus stepped up beside me, placing a gentle, protective hand on my shoulder. “It’s over, Claire. You won.”

I turned and looked at Marcus, then looked down at my phone. I tapped the screen and opened the live video monitor app linked to St. Matthew’s Hospital.

On the screen, Noah was sleeping peacefully in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling, safe, warm, and protected from the cold world outside.

“No, Marcus,” I said, letting out a long, deep breath that washed ten years of pain out of my chest forever. “I didn't just win. I started over.”
