Chapter 5 - THE IMPLOSION OF NATHAN

Three days later, the storm burst wide open.
On Friday morning, Maya filed the federal lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
Because the filing contained allegations of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement involving a major defense contractor, the court documents were immediately made public on the federal PACER system.
By noon, the story exploded across Texas news outlets.
The Dallas Morning News ran a front-page headline: DEFENSE CEO ACCUSED OF FRACTURING DAUGHTER'S JAW, EMBEZZLING $5.2M TRUST TO FUND AIR FORCE SON.
A local television station obtained leaked mobile phone footage recorded by a guest at the Grand Monarch Hotel. The six-second clip clearly showed my father swinging his heavy fist, the sickening crack of the impact echoing over the background music, followed by Nathan calmly raising his champagne glass and saying, "About time."
The viral video amassed over four million views in twelve hours.
The social media reaction was catastrophic for the Halden family. The image of a wealthy, powerful CEO brutally assaulting his daughter in a room full of generals shocked the public, but it was Nathan’s icy, sadistic smile that captured the internet's fury.
He was dubbed "Captain Champagne" across social media platforms.
At 2:30 p.m. on Friday, I was sitting in Maya’s office, my face still wrapped in surgical compression bandages, when Maya’s assistant knocked on the glass door.
"Maya," the assistant said, holding a tablet. "The Air Force Office of Special Investigations just issued a press release."
Maya tapped the screen. She read the text aloud, her eyes wide with satisfaction:
‘In light of ongoing federal civil litigation and criminal allegations involving fraud and grand larceny, the United States Air Force has suspended Captain Nathan Halden from his duties, pending a formal Inspector General inquiry. His security clearance has been temporarily revoked, and his upcoming assignment to the Pentagon Defense Technology Acquisition Group has been canceled.’
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, heavy breath through my nose.
For twenty years, Nathan had been treated as an invincible god who could do no wrong. My father had spent millions of my stolen inheritance to paint him as a star officer, a future general, the pristine pride of the Halden bloodline.
In less than twelve hours, that golden armor had turned into ash.
Ten minutes later, my phone began vibrating frantically.
It was Nathan.
I tapped the screen, holding the phone to my right ear. My jaw wires made my voice sound like a metallic whisper. "What do you want, Nathan?"
"You ruined my life!" Nathan screamed into the phone, his voice cracked with unhinged, hysterical rage. I could hear loud background noises—doors slamming and military personnel speaking harshly. "You crazy, jealous bitch! They just escorted me out of my office! They took my badge! My Pentagon posting is gone!"
"You stood there," I whispered slowly, each word requiring immense physical effort. "You drank champagne while Dad broke my face."
"He was trying to keep you quiet!" Nathan roared. "You were going to ruin everything! That money was meant for me! Dad said it was family capital! I deserved that posting! I deserved that penthouse!"
"That money was mine, Nathan," I said, my tone completely flat. "Grandmother left it to me. You lived in a five-million-dollar fantasy built on my blood."
"I'll kill you, Evelyn! I swear to God, if my military commission is revoked, I will—"
"Nathan Halden," Maya’s voice boomed over the speaker as she leaned over my shoulder. "This phone line is being recorded by federal investigators. You have just uttered a direct threat against a federal plaintiff and criminal witness. Stay where you are. I am calling the local Military Police right now."
May you like
Nathan gasped, realized what he had done, and hung up the phone.
Maya looked down at me, her face glowing with triumph. "That's felony witness intimidation on a recorded line. Your brother just guaranteed his own dishonorable discharge."
