Part 3

Three days later, the fraud review exploded.

I was in my office when Evelyn walked in carrying another folder.

The look on her face told me this was worse.

"How bad?" I asked.

She sat across from me.

"Much worse than seventy-two thousand."

My stomach tightened.

Evelyn opened the folder.

Over the past four years, Brielle hadn't just abused company accounts.

She had used family trust funds.

Personal loans.

Corporate reimbursements.

And one account I recognized immediately.

Dad's retirement reserve.

The color drained from my face.

"How much?"

Evelyn slid a spreadsheet across the desk.

"$1.8 million."

Silence filled the room.

I stared at the numbers.

Luxury vacations.

Designer purchases.

Failed business launches.

Credit card balances.

Private club memberships.

Everything had been hidden through dozens of small transfers.

Dad hadn't lost the company.

He had been quietly financing Brielle's failures for years.

And now there was almost nothing left.

I leaned back slowly.

"Does he know?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"Not yet."

That evening I drove to my parents' house.

For the first time in my life, Dad opened the door looking exhausted.

Not angry.

Not proud.

Just tired.

Mom sat in the living room crying.

Brielle was nowhere to be seen.

I placed the folder on the coffee table.

Dad frowned.

"What is this?"

"Proof."

Twenty minutes later, he looked twenty years older.

His hands trembled.

His breathing became uneven.

Every page revealed another lie.

Another withdrawal.

Another forged authorization.

Another excuse Brielle had used.

Finally he stopped reading.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"No... she wouldn't."

I looked directly at him.

"She already did."

Mom buried her face in her hands.

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Dad whispered something I never expected to hear.

"I ruined everything."

The next morning Brielle returned.

She walked into the house smiling.

The smile disappeared when she saw me.

Then she saw the documents.

Then she saw Dad.

For the first time in her life, nobody rushed to defend her.

Nobody made excuses.

Nobody blamed me.

Dad stood slowly.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Tell me the truth."

Brielle laughed nervously.

"Dad, she's manipulating you."

He dropped the folder onto the table.

Thousands of pages scattered across the floor.

"THE TRUTH!"

The shout shook the room.

Brielle froze.

Mom started crying again.

And finally, after years of lies, Brielle broke.

Everything came out.

The hidden debts.

The fake business expenses.

The forged signatures.

The loans she never intended to repay.

The gambling losses she had hidden from everyone.

When she finished speaking, Dad looked like a man watching his entire life collapse.

Because the daughter he sacrificed everything for had never actually needed saving.

She had simply learned that someone else would always pay.

And for years, that someone had been him.

Then Dad looked at me.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Natalie..."

But for once, there was nothing left to say.

The damage had already been done.

And the hardest part was still coming.
