Chapter 3 - The Freeze

The waiter returned exactly three minutes later.
The effortless, welcoming warmth that usually defined the staff at Aurum House was entirely gone. The young man's face was completely pale, his posture stiff and rigid as a board. He held the matte-black card on a silver tray, but he didn't hand it back. Instead, two senior security managers in tailored black suits stepped into the doorway of the Sapphire Room, their expressions grim and uncompromising.
Daniel frowned, his eyebrows knitting together in immediate annoyance. "Is there a problem? We're in the middle of a private celebration."
“Mr. Whitmore,” the waiter said, his voice dropping to a quiet, strained whisper that cut through the soft cello music playing in the background. “I’m incredibly sorry… but the transaction failed. The payment was declined.”
Daniel’s face flushed an angry, bright crimson. He slammed his wine glass down onto the table, splashing the expensive Bordeaux onto the pristine white tablecloth. “That’s impossible. That card has an unlimited corporate line of credit. Your machine is broken. Run it again immediately.”
“Sir, we did run it again,” the waiter replied, his voice tightening. “We ran it three times through different terminals. It didn't just decline. The system issued a red-flag alert.”
“Then use the backup card!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with a sudden, sharp spike of panic. He reached into his wallet and pulled out three more cards—the travel card, the personal savings link, and the emergency line. “Run these! All of them! Just pick one and make it work!”
The waiter swallowed hard, looking over his shoulder at the security managers before looking back at Daniel. “Sir… our accounting department just contacted the fraud division of the issuing bank. All linked cards under the Hayes Global account have been permanently cancelled, frozen, or heavily restricted as of five hours ago.”
Vanessa’s practiced, beautiful smile vanished in an instant. Her eyes darted from Daniel to the jewelry tray, which the gemologist was already quietly rolling back toward the secure vault. "Daniel? What is he talking about? What do you mean it's frozen?"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel snapped, his smooth veneer completely disintegrating. He snatched the physical receipt from the waiter’s trembling hand, his eyes scanning the itemized list.
The oysters. The Wagyu. The vintage wine. The private entertainment. The sapphire necklace.
The total printed at the bottom of the page was a staggering, undeniable $998,000.
"This is a mistake," Daniel stuttered, the alcohol suddenly clearing from his brain, leaving behind a cold, paralyzing terror. "I am a named authorized user on this account. Call the bank president. I know him personally!"

"The bank president cannot override a security lock placed by the primary account holder, Mr. Whitmore," the senior security manager said, stepping forward into the room. His tone was polite, but his stance made it entirely clear that they were not allowed to leave. "As it stands, you have consumed premium luxury goods and services without a valid form of payment. In this establishment, that is categorized as grand larceny."
The walls of the Sapphire Room, once a symbol of his absolute triumph, suddenly felt like a prison cell closing in around him.
