Chapter 2 - THE BREAKING OF THE BONES

The sound of the hammer striking bone was not a dull thud; it was a sickening, echoing crack that sounded like a dry branch snapping under the wheel of a heavy truck.

Emily screamed.

It was a raw, primal shriek that tore straight from the bottom of her lungs, ripping her vocal cords until her throat burned with the taste of hot iron. Agony exploded through her left knee, a white-hot flash of white-out pain that blinded her, making her vision spin into chaotic red and black whorls. She collapsed sideways against the heavy steel chain, her body convulsing as wave after wave of nauseating shock rolled through her nervous system.

“You think you’re clever, don't you?” Brandon whispered, his voice dangerously low, hovering just above her ear as she panted like a dying animal on the floor. “You think because your old man left you a few warehouses, you can look down at me? You can treat me like a kept man in my own house?”

Before Emily could even draw her next shuddering breath, before the agony in her left leg could even begin to register as a dull, throbbing roar, Brandon shifted his weight.

He swung the hammer again.

Crack.

This time, the blow landed squarely on her right knee. The impact shattered the kneecap into fragments, sending a secondary surge of electricity through her entire spinal cord. Emily didn't even have enough air left in her lungs to scream properly; a high, thin, whistling whimper escaped her parted lips as her body went rigid, then slack.

Tears streamed down her dirt-streaked face, matting the jagged remnants of her chopped hair against her cheeks. She curled herself into a tight, shivering fetal position against the heavy chain, her legs utterly useless, burning with a agony so absolute that her brain nearly shut down to protect her from passing out.

Around the room, the guests shifted uncomfortably. A few women turned away, covering their mouths with manicured hands, whispering among themselves. But nobody moved. Nobody stepped forward to stop him. In Brandon’s world of unbridled ambition and corporate ruthlessness, power was absolute, and whoever held the hammer wrote the rules.

“That’s for every time you looked at me like I was a clerk asking for a raise,” Brandon said coldly, tossing the heavy hammer onto a velvet armchair with a dull thud. He adjusted his cuffs, his breathing only slightly elevated. “Now. Are we going to sign the papers like a civilized couple, or do we need to continue this lesson?”

Emily couldn't speak. Her teeth were clenched so hard her jaw ached. Her legs felt like they were dipped in molten lead, sending white-hot agony through her thighs with every microscopic twitch of the floorboards.

Brandon turned toward Melissa with a dismissive gesture.

“Bring him in,” Brandon ordered.

Melissa smiled, her eyes gleaming with sadistic glee, and walked quickly toward the service hallway leading to the back kitchen. A moment later, the sharp scratching of claws against hardwood echoed through the room.

Cooper.

Emily’s eyes flew open wide, a fresh wave of terror piercing through the haze of her physical agony.

Cooper was a golden retriever mix—three years old, with amber eyes, floppy ears, and a heart full of boundless, loyal affection. He had slept at the foot of Emily’s bed every single night since she rescued him from a rural shelter, following her from room to room, sitting beside her chair when she worked, acting as her shadow and her truest friend through the loneliest months of her marriage.

Now, the dog looked frantic, terrified. He struggled wildly against a choke collar as Melissa dragged him into the center of the living room by a heavy nylon leash. Cooper’s eyes were wide, the whites showing, his tail tucked tight between his legs as he smelled the blood, the sweat, and the unnatural, charged panic in the air.

The moment Cooper caught sight of Emily lying crumpled on the floor near the piano, he let out a high-pitched, desperate whine and lunged forward with all his strength, nearly ripping the leash out of Melissa’s manicured hands.

“No,” Emily whispered, shaking her head frantically, her voice a broken rasp. “No... please... leave him out of this...”

Melissa produced a small, clear glass vial and a plastic medical syringe from the pocket of her blazer. With cold, practiced efficiency, she popped the rubber top of the vial, inverted it, and drew back the plunger, filling the syringe with a clear, amber-tinted liquid.

“Melissa, I swear to God—” Emily choked out, trying to drag herself across the floor toward her dog, but the heavy steel chain around her ankle locked tight with a vicious jerk, pinning her in place.

“Shut up,” Melissa hissed, stepping up behind Cooper. With a swift, practiced motion, she jammed the needle deep into the thick muscle of the dog’s hind leg and depressed the plunger all the way down.

Cooper yelped—a sharp, high bark of surprise and pain—and spun around, trying to bite at his flank.

“No! Please!” Emily screamed, tears blinding her anew.

Within moments, the drug took effect with terrifying speed. Cooper’s front legs buckled. His entire body began to tremble violently, a fine, rhythmic tremor running from his ears to his tail. His amber eyes clouded over with stark, uncomprehending terror, panting heavily as foam began to gather at the corners of his mouth.

Brandon released the leash from Melissa’s hand and stepped back, watching with clinical detachment.

Free, but utterly uncoordinated and panicked by the synthetic paralytic and hallucinogen coursing through his nervous system, Cooper rushed forward, stumbling over his own legs. He didn't run away; his animal instinct for safety drove him straight toward the only familiar thing in a room full of monsters: Emily.

He lunged into her lap, but the drugs were already scrambling his brain, turning his protective instincts into a frenzied, terrifying panic. Whimpering wildly, Cooper began frantically tearing at the heavy fabric of Emily’s dress with his front paws, his nails snagging on the silk, his jaws snapping blindly at the air as the neurological storm overwhelmed him.

“Cooper... stop... it’s me...” Emily sobbed, wrapping her bound arms around his neck as best she could, pulling his shaking body against her chest despite the claws ripping through her clothes and scraping her skin. “Cooper... it’s me, baby... it’s Emily...”

Her voice was barely more than a ragged whisper now, lost beneath the pounding bass of the stereo and the chatter of the guests. She kept repeating his name over and over, rocking back and forth against the hardwood floor, desperately hoping that somewhere beneath whatever nightmare chemical Brandon had injected into him, her boy would recognize her voice, feel her heartbeat, and remember who she was.

That was when the horrifying, sickening truth of the night crystallized in Emily’s mind.

They weren't simply torturing her into signing the corporate transfer papers.

They intended to kill her tonight.

The heavy dose of whatever was in that wine, combined with the chaos in the room, the staged struggle with the dog, and the deliberate trauma, was all part of an elaborate, premeditated script. They were going to make her death look like a tragic, drug-induced psychotic break—a wealthy woman snapping under the pressure of her inheritance, overdosing on sedatives, and being accidentally mauled or neglected in a domestic dispute gone wrong.

Brandon crouched down beside her, his face inches from hers, wearing the mask of a grieving, misunderstood husband.

“It’s a shame, really, Em,” Brandon whispered softly, his breath smelling of champagne. “Everyone in Springfield knows how stressed you’ve been since your father retired. They know you’ve been dabbling in heavy prescriptions. When the police find you here tomorrow morning... nobody’s going to ask any questions. And your old man? Your dear old trucker dad? He’ll be too brokenhearted to look into it.”

May you like

He tapped her cheek lightly with the back of his fingers, patronizing and cruel.

“Your father won't even know the truth.”
