Chapter 3 - The Cryptic Legacy

The physical marks on Lily were documented by Dr. Sterling, who, by law, was required to file a report with Child Protective Services due to the suspicious nature of the bruising. I didn't care about the family scandal anymore. I didn't care what my father's lawyers would do.
My mind was entirely consumed by the yellowed piece of paper sitting on the passenger seat of my car.
I had tucked Lily into bed at our small bungalow in East Austin. She was exhausted, her little body finally giving in to the fatigue of the day’s trauma. I sat at the kitchen table, the tarnished silver key and the DNA test illuminated by the single, harsh light of the pendant lamp above.
My phone rang again. This time, it wasn't my mother or father.
It was Arthur Pendelton, Claire’s uncle and the sole surviving member of her family. Arthur was a retired trust attorney, a man who had always kept his distance from the Vance family, viewing them with a quiet, scholarly disdain.
"Daniel," Arthur’s voice was gravelly, carrying the fatigue of his seventy years. "I received a rather frantic call from your mother this evening. She was attempting to locate you. She seemed... let's say, uncharacteristically panicked."
"Arthur," I said, my voice cracking. "I found something."
A long silence stretched over the line.
"What did you find, Daniel?"
"A DNA test. From five years ago. It says Lily isn't my daughter."
I heard the sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Then, the sound of a glass being set down on a wooden desk.
"Where did you find it?" Arthur asked, his tone suddenly sharp, stripped of its usual casual warmth.
"Lily found it. Hiding in my mother's laundry room. She found the key to Claire's silver jewelry box, and this paper was with it. Arthur... did Claire... did she have an affair? Is that why she kept this hidden?"
"Daniel, listen to me very carefully," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. "Claire loved you more than life itself. She never, not once, looked at another man. If there is a document claiming Lily is not your daughter, it is a lie—but not the kind of lie you think."
"What do you mean?"
"Your parents, Robert and Linda, have been playing a very long, very dangerous game," Arthur explained. "Before Claire died, she discovered that your father’s development company was using her family’s historic land holdings in West Austin as collateral for a series of massive, fraudulent offshore loans. When Claire threatened to go to the federal authorities, she suddenly became ill."
My blood ran cold. "The cardiovascular failure..."
"I cannot prove anything regarding her medical treatment, Daniel," Arthur said, his voice heavy with regret. "But I do know this: Claire’s grandfather left a fifteen-million-dollar trust fund. Under the terms of that trust, the money passes directly to Claire's biological children upon her death, with you as the sole trustee."
"But if Lily is proven not to be your biological child," Arthur continued, "or if you are declared an unfit parent due to instability, the control of that trust reverts back to the co-trustees of the master estate. And who do you think those co-trustees are, Daniel?"
"Robert and Linda," I whispered.
"Exactly. They forged that DNA test five years ago to hold over Claire’s head. They used it to blackmail her, to keep her quiet about their financial fraud. They threatened to release that test, to destroy your marriage, and to take Lily away from you if Claire ever spoke to the SEC."
"And when Claire died..."
"They kept the document," Arthur said. "As a contingency. If you ever stepped out of line, or if they ever needed to seize control of Lily’s trust to cover their rising debts, they would use that forged test to strip you of your parental rights."
I looked at the tarnished silver key resting on the table.
"Arthur, what does this key open?"
"Claire had a safety deposit box at the Texas Heritage Bank on Congress Avenue," Arthur said. "She told me that if anything ever happened to her, and if you ever found the key, you were to go there immediately. She said the evidence to destroy the Vance family empire was inside."
I picked up the key, its cold metal biting into my palm.

"I'm going first thing in the morning," I said.
"Be careful, Daniel," Arthur warned. "Your father has eyes everywhere in this city. If he realizes you have that key, he will stop at nothing to keep you from opening that box."
