Chapter 5 - What Was Left Behind

Ten minutes later, the high-pitched whine of a circular saw ripped through the silence of the back hallway. Sparks flew as forensic technicians cut through the subfloorboards beneath the spot where the bare mattresses had laid.

With a loud metallic screech, a technician pried back a section of the wood, revealing a heavy, steel safe bolted directly into the concrete foundation of the house.

"It’s a biometric dual-keypad safe," the technician reported, shining a flashlight into the pit. "Requires a digital code and a physical key."

"I know the combination she used for our home security," I said, stepping forward past the police line. "Try 0-8-1-2—Lily's birthday."

The technician typed the digits into the electronic pad. A green light flashed, accompanied by a high-pitched beep.

"Now we need the key," Detective Hayes said, shining her light onto the keyhole.

I reached down into my pocket and pulled out my ring of house keys. Attached to the back was a small, silver tubular key that Sarah had given me four years ago, claiming it belonged to our outdoor shed lock. I pulled it off the ring and handed it to the technician.

He inserted the key, turned it ninety degrees to the right, and pulled the heavy steel door open.

Inside the safe sat three thick black leather binders, a silver encrypted USB drive, and a stack of banded hundred-dollar bills totaling fifty thousand dollars.

Agent Vance carefully reached into the safe with gloved hands, pulling out the top binder and opening it across the desk in the dining room.

As he flipped through the pages, my blood ran cold all over again.

It was not just financial records.

It was an meticulously organized journal—a cold, clinical log book kept by Sarah over the entire seven years of our marriage.

Page after page detailed my daily routines, my work passwords, my travel schedules, and horrifying entries regarding our children.

Entry: March 14th. David is traveling to Boston for four days. Perfect window to complete the Zurich transfer. Lily is becoming too vocal and asking where I go during the day. Administered minor sedative in her juice to keep her asleep.

Entry: June 22nd. Tommy’s crying is becoming an operational liability. Soundproofing installed in rear storage closet. Installed external deadbolt. If federal authorities initiate surveillance on the house, closet will serve as secure staging area.

I slammed my fist onto the dining room table so hard the wood cracked under my knuckle. "She was drugging my daughter! She was planning to lock them away for months!"

Detective Hayes placed a hand on my back, her eyes filled with rage as she read the entries. "This woman isn't just a fraudster, Marcus. She’s a predator."

"Look at the last entry," Agent Vance said, pointing his pen at a line written just six days ago, on the night before she left.

Entry: November 3rd. David leaves for Chicago tomorrow morning. The final wire transfers are pending. I cannot risk the children attracting neighbor attention while I am in transit to O'Hare. They will remain in the secure holding room. If David returns as scheduled on the 17th, he will find them. If his flight is delayed, nature will take its course. Either way, my involvement in this life ends tomorrow.

"Nature will take its course," I whispered, the sickening words echoing in my head. She hadn't just neglected them. She had knowingly left them to die a slow, agonizing death if I had been delayed by a single day on my business trip.

"David," Vance said, setting down his pen and looking at me with absolute dead seriousness. "She left fifty thousand dollars in cash in this safe. A fugitive on the run without an operational credit card or passport needs cash to survive. She knows you were supposed to be in Chicago until tonight. She doesn't know you came home two days early."

"She’s coming back for the cash," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.

"She has to," Vance agreed. "She thinks the house is still empty. She thinks you are still two thousand miles away in Illinois, and she thinks the kids are locked in that room."

I looked Vance straight in the eyes. "Then set the trap. Use me. Do whatever you have to do, but bring that monster down."
