Chapter 6 - REBUILDING FROM THE ASHES

Three days later, the storm had cleared, leaving the Arizona desert under a high, pale blue sky.
I sat beside Irene’s bed in a private wing of the hospital, holding her hand softly. Her swelling had reduced significantly, her broken ribs were wrapped, and the doctor had given us the ultimate gift forty minutes prior: a strong, steady audio stream of our unborn child’s heart beating like a miniature engine.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Irene looked at me, a soft tear rolling down her cheek. “You know the whole truth now, don't you?”
“I do,” I said, bringing her knuckles to my lips and kissing them gently. “I saw your father. I saw the logs. I know you were trying to catch them yourself.”
“I was so scared, Austin,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “When I realized your mother was working with Julian, I felt like I was trapped in a room where every wall was closing in. I thought if I told you without absolute proof, your mother would convince you I was crazy. She had already planted so many seeds of doubt in your mind about my spending, about my family background...”
“You don't ever have to prove yourself to me again,” I said firmly, looking her straight in her good eye. “I failed you, Irene. I let toxic, greedy people into our home because I felt an unearned obligation to blood. I brought the danger to our door.”
“We brought each other through it,” she said softly, squeezing my hand back. “What happens now?”
“Now, we clean house,” I replied.
Over the next forty-eight hours, my legal team went to war. We filed an emergency injunction freezing every asset held in Margaret and Carla’s names. I revoked all power-of-attorney documents, terminated their trusts, and initiated civil forfeiture proceedings to reclaim every dollar I had gifted them over the past decade.
Julian Mercer was formally indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of wire fraud, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit violent felonies. Faced with thirty years in federal prison, his lawyers immediately offered a complete settlement, surrendering all claims to the disputed Cayman accounts and signing a total release of liability in exchange for a plea bargain.

Arthur Vance, recognized by federal prosecutors as a low-level informant who ultimately co-operated with Irene, was sentenced to two years of home confinement under strict federal supervision.
The Wentworth family name was cleansed—not by hiding from the truth, but by burning away the rot with absolute, unyielding justice.
