PART 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

The first thing I did after leaving Graham’s house was drive.

I didn’t know where.

I just knew I couldn’t breathe inside those walls anymore.

The ocean road was empty.

The waves crashed against the rocks.

And for the first time in years…

I felt free.

Then my phone rang.

The doctor.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something inside me told me I should.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Are you okay?”

I smiled sadly.

That was the question everyone asked after hurting you.

Not:

“Did I hurt you?”

Only:

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

The doctor paused.

Then gently said:

“You should come back tomorrow. We need to discuss your results.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Results?”

“Yes.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“What kind of results?”

Another pause.

“Claire, I think you already know.”

After the call ended, I pulled over.

My hands were shaking.

Because deep down…

I knew.

The next morning, I returned to the clinic.

The doctor sat across from me.

She looked at my file.

Then at me.

“Claire, the previous diagnosis you received was incomplete.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Your condition was treatable.”

The room went silent.

“What are you saying?”

She turned the screen toward me.

And there it was.

A small image.

A heartbeat.

My heartbeat stopped.

“That’s impossible.”

She smiled.

“It’s not.”

I stared.

“Am I…”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“You’re pregnant.”

I couldn’t move.

After eleven years of believing my body had failed me…

There was a life inside me.

Then she said:

“There’s more.”

I looked up.

“More?”

She smiled.

“The ultrasound shows two.”

I covered my mouth.

Twins.

Two babies.

My babies.

The happiness lasted exactly three minutes.

Because then I remembered.

Graham.

I remembered his face.

His words.

The divorce.

The woman he chose.

I touched my stomach.

And whispered:

“I have to protect you.”

That was when I made my decision.

I would not tell Graham.

Not yet.

Not while he believed he had erased me.

Not while he was preparing to start a new life.

I needed time.

Time to understand.

Time to build something for my children.

But fate had other plans.

Because that afternoon, when I returned to my apartment, there was another envelope waiting.

No sender.

Just my name.

Inside was one photograph.

Graham.

And Brielle.

Together.

Smiling.

On the back, someone had written:

He never loved you. He chose you because of what you could give him.

I stared at the words.

Then another paper slipped out.

A financial document.

My eyes widened.

Because my name was on it.

My inheritance.

The one my grandfather left me.

The one Graham had always encouraged me to invest with his family.

The one I thought was gone.

But it wasn’t.

Someone had been hiding it.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

This divorce was not about Brielle.

It was about money.
