Part 4: The Woman Who Stayed Silent

The next morning began with unexpected news.

Liam walked into my hospital room carrying a folder instead of his usual cup of coffee.

His expression told me something had changed.

"What is it?" I asked.

He placed the folder on the bedside table.

"The detectives called."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"They've spoken with several people from Apex Development."

"And?"

"Some employees confirmed they noticed changes over the past year."

"What kind of changes?"

"They said you gradually stopped attending meetings."

I gave a bitter smile.

"I didn't stop."

"Ethan stopped inviting me."

For years, everyone believed I had simply chosen to step away from the business.

The truth was much simpler.

Every important meeting was suddenly scheduled without my knowledge.

Emails disappeared before reaching me.

Calendar invitations were canceled.

When investors asked why I wasn't there, Ethan always smiled.

"Claire wants a quieter life."

Nobody questioned him.

Why would they?

He sounded convincing.

Daniel arrived shortly after noon.

"I have good news."

I raised an eyebrow.

"I spoke with Olivia."

"The former executive assistant?"

He nodded.

"She agreed to meet."

I looked surprised.

"Really?"

"She said she's been waiting a long time for someone to ask the right questions."

That afternoon, Olivia entered my hospital room carrying a small bouquet of white lilies.

She looked nervous.

Older than I remembered.

As though the last few years had weighed heavily on her.

She placed the flowers beside my bed.

"I'm glad you're alive."

"So am I."

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she broke the silence.

"I should have said something sooner."

Daniel opened his notebook.

"Take your time."

Olivia nodded.

"When I first started working at Apex..."

"...you were the person everyone respected."

I looked at her.

"I didn't know that."

"You solved problems."

"You treated people fairly."

She smiled faintly.

"The staff called you the quiet engine."

I couldn't help laughing.

"I've never heard that before."

"Ethan hated that nickname."

Olivia's smile disappeared.

"Everything changed after you stopped coming to the office."

"He started making every decision alone."

Daniel asked,

"Did you personally witness any violence?"

Olivia answered honestly.

"No."

"I never saw anything physical."

"But..."

She hesitated.

"I heard arguments."

"What kind of arguments?"

"He often yelled after closing his office door."

"Sometimes..."

"...I heard your voice crying."

The room became silent.

"I wanted to help," Olivia continued.

"But every time I considered reporting something..."

"...I convinced myself I didn't know enough."

She looked down at her hands.

"I've regretted that every day since I resigned."

I reached over and gently touched her hand.

"You can't change the past."

She nodded slowly.

"I know."

"But maybe I can help now."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What can you tell us?"

Olivia took a deep breath.

"Ethan became obsessed with controlling information."

"What do you mean?"

"He insisted that every important document pass through him first."

She paused.

"He also ordered new access controls for the accounting department."

I frowned.

"I never approved those."

"I know."

She removed a small notebook from her purse.

"I wrote things down."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You kept notes?"

"Not official records."

"Just reminders."

"Dates."

"Meetings."

"People who came and went."

She handed the notebook to Daniel.

"I thought they might matter someday."

Daniel carefully flipped through the pages.

Each entry was short.

Professional.

Objective.

No accusations.

Only observations.

Meeting canceled.

Records requested.

Unexpected visitors.

Locked filing room.

He smiled slightly.

"This timeline could be useful."

Olivia looked relieved.

"I wasn't sure."

Liam entered quietly after finishing his rounds.

Olivia immediately stood.

"I'm sorry."

"I didn't mean to stay so long."

Liam smiled warmly.

"You're helping my sister."

"You're exactly where you should be."

Before Olivia left, she stopped beside my bed.

"I need to tell you one more thing."

I looked up.

"The week before I resigned..."

"...Ethan asked me to destroy several old accounting files."

Daniel looked up instantly.

"What happened?"

"I refused."

"Did he explain why?"

"No."

"He simply said they were no longer necessary."

"And?"

"I told him document retention policies didn't allow that."

She smiled sadly.

"He wasn't happy."

Daniel wrote another note.

"Do you know what happened to those files?"

Olivia shook her head.

"No."

"I left the company two days later."

After she departed, I stared out the hospital window.

For years I had wondered whether anyone had noticed what was happening.

Now I knew.

People had noticed pieces.

But pieces alone rarely tell the whole story.

Fear fills in the rest.

That evening, my physical therapist helped me walk a short distance down the hallway.

Every step hurt.

My ribs protested.

My head still ached.

But I kept moving.

Liam smiled from the nurses' station.

"That's my little sister."

I laughed.

"I don't feel very strong."

"You don't have to."

"You just have to keep going."

When I returned to my room, Daniel was waiting with another update.

"The court approved a temporary protective order."

Relief washed over me.

"So Ethan can't contact me?"

"Not directly."

"And security has already received a copy."

For the first time since waking up in the hospital...

I finally believed I was safe.

As night settled over Riverside Hospital, my phone buzzed with a new email.

The sender's name made me stop breathing.

Internal Audit Department – Apex Development

There was no message.

Only one attachment.

Its title read:

Executive Authorization Log

I frowned.

"I've never seen this file."

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

"Open it."

I clicked the attachment.

Rows of approval records appeared on the screen.

At first glance, everything looked ordinary.

Then my eyes landed on a familiar signature.

My own name.

Except...

I had never signed those documents.

I slowly looked at Daniel.

"Those aren't mine."

He studied the screen carefully.

"You sound certain."

"I am."

Someone had approved major company decisions...

May you like

Using my name.

And I had never seen a single one.
