Chapter 4 - The Public Trial

Six months later.

The marble steps of the Federal District Courthouse were packed with news cameras, reporters, and dozens of onlookers holding printed signs. The scandal surrounding Ethan Vance had dominated the regional headlines for months, exposing the dark, violent underbelly of the city's high-society elite.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was heavy with anticipation.

Clara sat at the prosecution table alongside Detective Miller and the Assistant United States Attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Ethan). She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit, her hair styled neatly, concealing the thin, barely visible scar near her hairline. She looked composed, quiet, and completely unshakeable.

Beside her sat Liam, dressed in a formal charcoal suit, his presence a steady anchor at her back.

A door at the side of the courtroom opened, and two armed federal marshals led Ethan Vance inside.

The transformation was striking. The polished, charismatic billionaire was gone. Ethan wore an oversized orange orange prison jumpsuit, heavy metal handcuffs chained around his waist, and leg shackles that clinked loudly against the wooden floor with every step. His hair was thinned and unstyled, his face gaunt, his skin pale from months without sunlight.

As he was led to the defense table, his eyes darted nervously across the gallery, avoiding the gazes of former business partners who had turned their backs on him. Finally, his eyes landed on Clara.

He stared at her, his jaw clenching, a flash of the old, dark rage flickering in his eyes.

Clara met his gaze directly. She didn't flinch. She didn't look away.

"All rise," the bailiff announced as Judge Helena Roderick stepped up to the bench.

The trial had reached its final stage. After three weeks of devastating testimony—including medical evidence presented by Liam, financial records presented by federal auditors, and hours of audio recordings Clara had secretly captured on her burner laptop—the jury had returned after just two hours of deliberation.

"Members of the jury," Judge Roderick said, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "Have you reached a unanimous verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreman stood up, holding a folded sheet of paper.

Ethan’s lead defense attorney leaned over, whispering frantically in Ethan’s ear, but Ethan remained frozen, staring at the floor, his breathing shallow.

"On Count One: Aggravated Domestic Assault resulting in severe bodily harm," the foreman read, "we find the defendant, Ethan Alexander Vance, guilty."

A quiet murmur ran through the gallery.

"On Count Two: Attempted Second-Degree Murder... guilty."

Ethan’s head dropped slightly lower.

"On Count Three through Eight: Wire Fraud, Federal Tax Evasion, and Money Laundering... guilty on all counts."

Clara felt a soft, trembling breath escape her chest. Beside her, Liam placed a firm, supportive hand on her shoulder.

Judge Roderick turned her stern gaze toward the defense table. "Mr. Vance, please stand for sentencing."

Ethan was pulled up by his attorney, his legs shaking inside the heavy shackles. He looked hollow, completely stripped of the grandiosity that had defined his life.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Roderick said, her voice cold as ice. "Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed evidence of a terrifying level of cruelty and deception. You leveraged your wealth, your social standing, and your physical strength to torture a human being who trusted you, while systematically plundering millions of dollars from innocent investors."

She paused, leaning forward over her bench.

"You believed that your money made you invincible. You believed that behind the closed doors of your mansion, you were above the law. You were wrong. For the charges of attempted murder, domestic assault, and federal financial crimes, I sentence you to thirty-two years in federal custody without the possibility of parole."

The gavel slammed down with a loud, final thud. BANG.

Ethan flinched as if he had been shot. The marshals immediately grabbed his arms, turning him toward the side exit.

As he was being led away, Ethan paused for a brief second, looking across the room at Clara one last time.

Clara stood up slowly from the prosecution table. She looked at the man who had tried to erase her, the man who had kept her in darkness, and she felt nothing—no hate, no fear, no lingering trauma. Just the clean, absolute knowledge that she had won.

She gave him a single, subtle nod of dismissal, then turned her back on him completely, stepping out into the hallway toward the waiting cameras and the bright, open sunlight.
