Chapter 3 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF BETRAYAL

The master bedroom was bright, bathed in the early afternoon sunlight streaming through the tall bay windows.

I stepped inside and locked the heavy oak door behind me.

I walked over to Javier’s executive desk in the corner of the room. It was an expensive, dark mahogany piece of furniture he had bought three years ago—a desk he always kept meticulously locked whenever he was away on his "business trips."

I reached under the lip of the top drawer, pulled out the small spare brass key he thought he had hidden so cleverly behind the carved trim, and inserted it into the keyhole.

It clicked open.

I pulled open the deep bottom drawer where he kept his private financial files.

I didn't have to search long. Sitting right at the front was a thick, black leather accordion folder labeled with a label maker: PERSONAL - PRIVATE.

I brought the folder over to our bed, sat down on the edge of the mattress, and pulled out the thick stack of bank statements, credit card bills, and loan documents spanning the last eighteen months.

I opened the top statement for the Platinum Rewards Card—the blue bank card Victor had just demanded I produce. The card was registered in my name as the primary account holder, with Javier listed as an authorized user, a setup we had established fifteen years ago when my credit score was higher than his.

My eyes scanned down the column of recent transactions.

The numbers blurred for a second before snapping into sharp, brutal focus.

October 12: $2,400.00 – Boutique De L'Amour (Luxury Jewelry)

October 14: $480.00 – Le Petit Bistro (Fine Dining - Dinner for Two)

October 18: $1,250.00 – The Grand Horizon Resort (Executive Suite - 2 Nights)

October 22: $600.00 – Cash Withdrawal (ATM Downtown)

October 25: $3,100.00 – Midtown Furniture Outlet (Delivery to 312 Oakridge Lane)

I flipped back through the previous six months of statements.

It was an endless, methodical trail of theft.

Javier hadn't just been having an affair with Teresa in a rented apartment downtown. He had been systematically draining our shared life, using my credit line to buy her gold bracelets, pay her apartment rent, purchase her furniture, and fund lavish weekend getaways while telling me his company was cutting back on annual bonuses.

There were cash advances totaling over fourteen thousand dollars over the past year alone.

There were charges for high-end women's clothing stores, spa packages, and high-end grocery deliveries sent directly to Oakridge Lane.

And that wasn't the worst of it.

At the bottom of the folder lay a recent notice from our mortgage provider.

Javier had quietly applied for a second mortgage on our house four months ago—forging my signature on the secondary authorization form—taking out sixty thousand dollars in equity.

The money hadn't gone into our joint savings. It had been transferred directly into a private offshore trading account registered under his name and Teresa's name as a joint beneficiary.

I sat on the edge of the bed holding those paper statements, my fingers turning cold.

While I had stayed home saving coupons, cooking meals, mending old clothes, and worrying about our retirement funds, Javier had been living like a king in a secret parallel universe—built entirely on my credit, my labor, and my trust.

And now, his mother and brother were waiting downstairs, expecting me to pull out that very same platinum card to pay twenty thousand dollars for a grand, polished walnut casket and white lilies so they could preserve his noble reputation in front of their church friends.

They wanted me to pay for his funeral with the same card he had used to buy his mistress's underwear.

A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.

"Lucy!" Victor’s impatient voice echoed through the wood. "What are you doing up there? We need to leave! Mother is waiting in the car!"

I looked down at the credit card statement in my hand.

I looked at the forged signature on the mortgage document.

I pulled my smartphone out of my purse.

I tapped the screen, opening my banking application. I logged into the primary account portal for the Platinum Rewards Card.

The total outstanding balance on the card sat at $38,450.00—nearly reaching its maximum limit, loaded with the debts of his secret life.

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

I didn't rage. I didn't cry out. I didn't break a single object in that room.

The coldness inside me transformed into something sharp, bright, and completely indestructible.

I dialed the customer service hotline printed on the back of the digital card display.

I placed the phone on speaker, raised my chin, and waited for the operator to answer.
