PART 3 — The Secret Ethan Died Protecting

I read Ethan’s letter again.
And again.
The words blurred through my tears.
The person you trust most may be the person you should fear.
That sentence stayed in my mind.
Because it changed everything.
My father had attacked me.
My brother had tried to take my son.
My mother had locked the door and watched.
But Ethan’s warning wasn’t about them.
Not completely.
He believed someone else was behind everything.
Someone closer.
Someone smarter.
Someone who had been hiding while everyone else took the blame.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me.”
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“What did Ethan find?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at my children.
Then back at me.
“I promised Ethan I would only tell you when you were safe.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Safe?”
I looked around the room.
“My father slapped me.”
“My brother stole my newborn.”
“My own family tried to force me to sign away everything.”
My hands tightened around Noah.
“Do I look safe to you?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
He opened his briefcase.
And removed another file.
“This is everything Ethan discovered during the last month of his life.”
My heart raced.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Because he was afraid.”
That hurt.
Ethan was never afraid.
Not of anything.
He was the man who stood up to anyone.
The man who fought for what was right.
But now I understood.
He wasn’t afraid for himself.
He was afraid for me.
Daniel placed the first document on the table.
It was a financial report.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Numbers.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Then I saw a name.
My father’s company.
I froze.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Ethan discovered your family had been secretly trying to access his business accounts.”
My stomach dropped.
“How?”
“Through fake legal claims.”
He turned another page.
“They believed after Ethan died, you would be too emotional to fight.”
I looked away.
Because they were right about one thing.
I was grieving.
I was broken.
But they were wrong about something else.
I was still a mother.
And mothers fight.
Daniel continued.
“Ethan began investigating.”
“And?”
“He found something worse.”
He pulled out a photograph.
A traffic camera image.
A car.
A truck.
A road.
My hands started shaking.
“That’s…”
Daniel nodded.
“The accident.”
I stared.
The image was blurry.
But I could see it.
Ethan’s car.
The other vehicle.
The moment before impact.
“What am I looking at?”
Daniel pointed.
“The truck.”
I leaned closer.
“What about it?”
“It was not where it was supposed to be.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“The driver claimed he lost control.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“But Ethan found evidence that the truck changed lanes intentionally.”
My breath caught.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Ethan believed someone caused the crash.”
My eyes filled.
“No…”
The pain I thought I had accepted came back.
The night I lost him.
The phone call.
The officer.
The empty side of the bed.
All of it.
A murder.
Not an accident.
“Who?”
Daniel was silent.
And that silence terrified me.
“Who did he think did it?”
Daniel looked at the door.
Then at the security officers.
Making sure no one was listening.
Then he said:
“Someone inside your family.”
My entire body went cold.
I looked at my father.
He immediately looked away.
My mother started crying.
Mark shook his head.
“No.”
He looked terrified.
“I didn’t do anything.”
Daniel stared at him.
“I didn’t say you did.”
The room became tense.
Because suddenly everyone was a suspect.
My father.
My mother.
My brother.
Even people who had claimed to love Ethan.
Then Lily started crying.
I looked down.
My daughter was awake.
Her tiny face was red.
I reached for her.
“Sweetheart…”
But she wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Daniel.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy knew.”
Everyone froze.
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Lily’s tiny hand grabbed my finger.
“Daddy knew something was wrong.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“How would she know?”
I stared at my daughter.
“Lily…”
She looked at me.
“When Daddy talked on the phone…”
Her voice was small.
“He told someone not to touch Mommy.”
My blood ran cold.
“When?”
“Before.”
She looked down.
“Before he went away.”
I felt dizzy.
“Lily, honey, Daddy didn’t go away.”
She looked confused.
Then whispered:
“No.”
“He said he had to go meet someone.”
Silence.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
She frowned, trying to remember.
“But Daddy was angry.”
My heart pounded.
Ethan didn’t leave for a business trip.
At least not only for that.
He had been investigating.
He had been meeting someone.
And he knew he was in danger.
Daniel looked at me.
“There’s something else.”
I almost laughed.
“Of course there is.”
He ignored the comment.
“Ethan left one final instruction.”
“What?”
Daniel took out his phone.
“He scheduled an automatic message.”
My hands went cold.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
I stared.
“Tonight?”
Daniel nodded.
“Because Ethan believed if he was right…”
He paused.
“The truth would need to come out after his death.”
The room went silent.
Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A notification appeared.
Scheduled message received.
Daniel opened it.
The message contained only one line.
Do not trust Richard Bell.
My father immediately stood.
“What?”
The officers reacted.
“Sit down.”
But my father wasn’t looking at them.
He was looking at me.
“I can explain.”
I stared.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You knew Ethan was investigating?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed him.
Because I saw the answer.
My father knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
“You lied to me.”
He stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect you.”
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“By taking my son?”
He had no answer.
Then the hospital room lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The security officer looked confused.
“Power issue?”
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Daniel answered.
Nobody spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a voice.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Ethan should have stopped digging.”
My blood turned to ice.
Daniel stood.
“Who is this?”
The man ignored him.
Instead, he said:
“You have his children.”
A pause.
“But you don’t have him.”
I grabbed Lily and Noah closer.
The voice continued.
“Yet.”
The call ended.
The room erupted.
Security moved immediately.
Police checked the hallway.
Daniel looked at me.
His face was pale.
“He knows you’re here.”
I looked at my babies.
Then at the locked hospital door.
Someone had found us.
Someone Ethan was afraid of.
Someone who had been waiting.
And then…
my father quietly said something that made everyone stop.
“He’s not going to come for the children.”
Everyone turned.
My father’s face was filled with fear.
“He’s coming for the evidence.”
I stared.
“What evidence?”
My father looked at me.
And whispered:
“The evidence Ethan hid before he died.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Because suddenly…
I understood.
The attack wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about custody.
It wasn’t even about my family.
They were searching for something Ethan left behind.
Something worth killing for.
May you like
And now…
I had to find it before they did.
