Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Jacket

The administrative machinery of St. Mary’s Medical Center moved with a silent, bureaucratic speed. Within forty minutes, a legal laboratory technician entered the room carrying a sealed, blue diagnostic kit containing sterilized cotton swabs, barcoded specimen vials, and a three-page chain-of-custody document that required multiple thumbprints and signatures.

Throughout the entire collection process, Ethan remained seated in the armchair in the far corner of the room, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his eyes fixed on the television screen mounted to the opposite wall. The screen was dark, its black glass surface acting as a mirror that reflected the interior of the suite like a surveillance feed.

He maintained his posture of righteous, victimized dignity, occasionally letting out a short, cynical laugh under his breath whenever Eleanor whispered something to Claire. He even went so far as to state aloud to the lab technician, “Make sure those barcodes are double-scanned. I know how easily records can be... altered in these urban facilities when someone has a personal interest in the outcome.”

Claire did not offer him the satisfaction of a verbal reply. She lay quietly, her left arm curled protectively around the clear plastic rim of the bassinet where Addison was sleeping, her small, pink fingers twitching in her sleep.

Her mind was operating with a sharp, deductive clarity that completely bypassed the emotional pain of his betrayal. She wasn't thinking about the dissolution of her marriage or the humiliation of the past two hours; she was reconstructing the timeline of the final weeks of her pregnancy.

She remembered the way Ethan’s travel schedule had suddenly accelerated during her eighth month—the sudden, mandatory structural inspections in Chicago and Kansas City that kept him away from the house for three days at a time. She remembered the late-night phone calls that always caused him to step out onto the dark backyard patio, his voice dropping into a tense, rapid whisper that ceased the moment she approached the glass door.

Most critically, she remembered the leather jacket he was currently wearing.

Two nights prior to her labor induction, while he was in the shower, she had gone into the master closet to retrieve his car keys. As she reached into the pocket of his jacket, her fingers had brushed against a thick, heavy cardstock envelope. She had pulled it out just far enough to see the corporate logo printed in the upper left corner: Vanguard Reproductive Sciences & Genetic Storage. Directly beneath the logo, scrawled in a messy, hurried handwriting that did not belong to Ethan, was a case reference number and a single phrase: Target Profile: Male Lineage Verification.

At the time, she had dismissed it as a document related to one of his high-wealth engineering clients who was dealing with a trust fund dispute. But standing there in the hospital room, watching his reflection in the dark television glass, she realized the terrifying truth. Ethan hadn't ordered this test because he suspected her of infidelity. He had ordered it because he had a specific, dark utility for the result—a utility that required the formal, documented exclusion of his own paternity.
