PART 3 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE BETRAYAL

I stared at the folder on the table.
For several seconds, I couldn’t touch it.
Because some part of me was terrified that knowing the truth would hurt more than the lies.
I had already lost Ethan.
I wasn’t sure my heart could survive another betrayal.
My father noticed my hesitation.
“Claire.”
His voice softened.
“You deserve to know.”
I looked toward Ethan’s empty bed.
The room felt different now.
Too quiet.
A few hours ago, there had been machines keeping my son alive.
Now there was only silence.
“Tell me.”
My father opened the folder.
The first document was a bank statement.
Garrett’s name.
Several large transfers.
My eyes moved across the numbers.
Then stopped.
“Where did this money come from?”
My father leaned forward.
“Your husband has been moving company funds.”
I frowned.
“Garrett doesn’t have access to my company.”
My father looked at me carefully.
“That’s what you believed.”
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What are you saying?”
He turned the page.
There were signatures.
Approval forms.
Digital authorizations.
All under my name.
Except they weren’t mine.
My hands started shaking.
“Forgery?”
My father nodded.
“For months.”
I looked at the papers.
The handwriting.
The signatures.
The dates.
It was terrifying how real they looked.
Garrett wasn’t just cheating.
He wasn’t just lying.
He had been stealing.
“Why?”
The word barely escaped my mouth.
My father looked down.
“Because he was losing money.”
I laughed bitterly.
“He always said business was going great.”
“He lied.”
Of course.
Another lie.
Another carefully designed story.
My father continued.
“Garrett’s company was failing. Debts were growing. Investors were leaving.”
I stared at him.
“But why use my name?”
My father hesitated.
Then answered:
“Because your inheritance is protected.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
“When your mother died, she created a trust for you.”
I knew that.
The trust was one of the reasons Garrett had married me.
At least, that thought had never crossed my mind before.
My father continued.
“The money cannot be accessed by anyone unless you approve.”
I swallowed.
“So he couldn’t take it.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“So he started building control over you instead.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
Control.
That was exactly what Garrett had been doing.
The late nights.
The criticism.
The way he made me doubt myself.
The way he convinced me I was always too emotional.
Too tired.
Too sensitive.
I thought those were marriage problems.
I realized they were strategies.
My father opened another document.
A medical report.
I recognized the hospital logo.
“What is this?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Claire…”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He pushed the paper toward me.
The report was dated six months earlier.
The first time Ethan became sick.
My heart stopped.
“No.”
My father’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Yes.”
I read the report.
Ethan’s condition.
The symptoms.
The recommended treatments.
Then one sentence caught my attention.
Delayed medical intervention may increase risk of severe complications.
I looked up.
“Why am I seeing this?”
My father’s voice was quiet.
“Because someone interfered with his treatment.”
The world stopped.
“What?”
“There were changes made to his medical records.”
My fingers went numb.
“No…”
I shook my head.
“Garrett wouldn’t.”
My father didn’t argue.
He just placed another page down.
A message.
Between Garrett and Melissa.
My eyes moved over the screen.
Melissa:
Are you sure delaying the treatment will work?
Garrett:
The longer he stays sick, the more dependent Claire becomes.
I stopped breathing.
I read it again.
And again.
But the words didn’t change.
My husband.
The father of my child.
The man Ethan waited for.
Had talked about my son like a problem.
A tool.
A way to control me.
“No.”
The sound came from my chest.
Not my mouth.
No.
Because I refused to believe it.
My father reached for me.
But I moved away.
I couldn’t let anyone touch me.
Not even him.
Because suddenly every touch felt like another lie.
A memory hit me.
Three months earlier.
Ethan had a fever.
A serious one.
I wanted to take him to the hospital.
Garrett stopped me.
“You panic too much.”
“He needs to be checked.”
“He’s fine.”
I remembered how angry he became.
How he told me I was making everything dramatic.
How I apologized.
How I stayed home.
How I trusted him.
My stomach turned.
I had failed Ethan too.
That thought destroyed me.
My father immediately saw it on my face.
“Claire.”
I whispered:
“I should have known.”
“No.”
“I should have protected him.”
“No.”
His voice became firm.
“You protected him every day.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“But not enough.”
My father looked at me.
“Don’t let Garrett steal your son twice.”
That sentence broke me.
The hospital door opened.
A detective entered.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
I wiped my face.
“Yes?”
He looked at my father.
“Mr. Sterling.”
My father stood.
“Is it confirmed?”
The detective nodded.
“We found more.”
My heart sank.
More?
How could there be more?
The detective placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“We traced Melissa Reed.”
I recognized the name.
The woman from the phone.
The woman who had my husband while my son died.
“Who is she?”
The detective looked at me.
“She was not just Garrett’s affair partner.”
A pause.
“She worked for one of his biggest investors.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The detective’s expression darkened.
“It means Garrett wasn’t only trying to steal your money.”
My breathing stopped.
“He was planning to take control of Sterling Global.”
My father’s face hardened.
“How?”
The detective looked at me.
“Through you.”
The room went silent.
My husband had spent years pretending to love me.
But he wasn’t building a life with me.
He was building a way to destroy everything my family had created.
And Ethan…
Ethan had been the one thing he never expected to lose.
The detective continued.
“We found evidence that Garrett planned to file for emergency guardianship.”
I stared.
“Guardianship?”
The detective nodded.
“He was preparing to claim you were emotionally unstable after Ethan’s death.”
My blood ran cold.
“He wanted custody?”
“Yes.”
I laughed.
A broken, painful laugh.
“He wanted my son.”
The detective didn’t answer.
Because we all knew.
Then my father opened the final page.
A photograph.
Garrett.
Melissa.
Another man.
And a contract.
At the bottom was a date.
The day after Ethan died.
The day they planned to begin the takeover.
My hands shook.
They weren’t just waiting for my son to die.
They were counting on it.
I looked toward the empty hospital bed.
The pain returned.
But this time, something else appeared.
Not just grief.
Anger.
A deep, burning anger.
My father saw it.
And for the first time that night, he nodded.
“Now you’re ready.”
I looked at him.
“For what?”
He closed the folder.
“For the moment Garrett realizes the woman he underestimated is no longer broken.”
A tear fell from my cheek.
But my voice was steady.
“Good.”
May you like
I looked at the door.
“Because I’m done losing.”
