Chapter 6 - The Trap is Springing

The silence in the ballroom became absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick carpet three rows away.

I stopped five feet from the base of the stage, resting my hands lightly against my hips, looking up at him with a calm, chilling neutrality that made his eyes widen with primal terror.

“Surprise, Evan,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent hall without even needing a microphone.

Evan gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white, his chest heaving under his tuxedo shirt. “Natalie... what... how are you...?”

“Walking?” I supplied helpfully, tilting my head. “It’s amazing what happens when you remove toxic weight from your life, isn't it? Physical therapy works wonders when you aren't constantly stressed by a lying, thieving husband.”

Panic surged across Evan’s face, replacing shock with desperate aggression. He forced a strained, brittle laugh into the microphone, trying to salvage his dignity in front of three hundred horrified investors. “Ladies and gentlemen, please excuse my—my estranged wife is dealing with some severe medical and psychological trauma following her accident. Security, could you please escort her—”

“Don't bother calling security, Evan,” a crisp, authoritative voice interrupted from the side entrance of the ballroom.

Marcus Vance walked down the center aisle flanked by two uniformed Raleigh police officers and a federal marshal holding a thick manila folder. The murmur in the crowd erupted into full-blown panic as people realized this wasn't a family dispute; it was a raid.

Evan dropped the crystal trophy. It hit the wooden stage with a deafening, echoing crash, shattering into a hundred glittering shards across the floor.

“Mr. Evan Carter?” Marcus said, stopping at the foot of the stage and holding up an official arrest warrant. “You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, interstate identity theft, forgery of estate documents, and attempted fraudulent acquisition of protected trust assets.”

“This is a mistake!” Evan shrieked, backing away from the podium as the police officers mounted the stage, their heavy boots thudding against the wood. “My lawyers haven't reviewed—this is a civil matter! She gave me power of attorney!”

“Power of attorney does not cover forging a deceased person's estate signature to bail out insolvent commercial real estate projects, Mr. Carter,” Marcus replied coldly, signaling to the officers. “Cuff him.”

As the officers grabbed Evan’s arms and forced his hands behind his back, his expensive Brioni suit twisting awkwardly around his shoulders, he looked down at me one last time. His eyes weren't filled with anger anymore; they were wide with a pathetic, whimpering realization that his entire empire—his status, his money, his mistress, his stolen future—had evaporated in less than sixty seconds.

“Natalie,” he choked out as they dragged him past the edge of the stage. “Natalie, please! We have children! Talk to Marcus! We can settle this—”

“You had your chance to settle this on the front porch six weeks ago, Evan,” I said softly, watching him pass without a single ounce of pity. “You wanted a clean break. Consider this finalized.”

Brittany had already slipped out through the side exit, her expensive red gown vanishing into the shadows of the hallway as she realized the man she had tied herself to was legally and financially radioactive.

The ballroom was in total chaos, murmurs and flashes of cell phone cameras capturing every second of the spectacle. Lauren rushed down the aisle, wrapping her arms around me and burying her face in my shoulder, laughing and crying all at once.

“You did it,” Lauren whispered fiercely against my neck. “My God, Nat, you actually walked right into the lion’s den and ate him alive.”

“No, Lo,” I said, looking down at the shattered crystal trophy glittering on the stage floor. “I just stepped out of the way and let him crush himself.”
