Part 3

The first sound I heard was the cane.
A slow, deliberate tap against the marble floor.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
The entire mansion went silent.
The party downstairs stopped.
The music disappeared.
The laughter faded.
For the first time in months, Richard Sterling looked uncertain.
I stood at the top of the staircase, one hand resting over my pregnant belly, listening to that familiar sound growing closer.
Then I saw him.
My grandfather.
Alexander Vance.
Seventy-nine years old.
Silver hair.
Perfect black suit.
A man who looked calm because he had never needed to raise his voice to control a room.
Everyone in business knew his name.
Not because he chased attention.
Because he built empires.
And because when Alexander Vance decided someone was his enemy…
They rarely survived the battle.
Richard walked forward, forcing a smile.
“Mr. Vance.”
My grandfather didn’t even acknowledge him.
His eyes found me.
Only me.
And for the first time in months, someone looked at me like I mattered.
Like I wasn’t an inconvenience.
Like I wasn’t a problem to solve.
“Eleanor.”
My throat tightened.
“Grandfather.”
His expression changed when he saw my face.
The tired eyes.
The stress.
The pain I had tried to hide.
Then his gaze moved to my stomach.
“My great-granddaughter.”
A small smile appeared.
“She should have been celebrated.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Richard stepped forward.
“This is a family matter.”
My grandfather slowly turned his head.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“But what I see here is not family.”
The room froze.
Chloe stood near the stairs, suddenly uncomfortable.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand the situation.”
My grandfather looked around.
The decorations.
The guests.
The champagne.
Then he looked at Chloe.
“I understand perfectly.”
Chloe lifted her chin.
“I’m carrying Richard’s son.”
My grandfather stared at her.
“And?”
The confidence disappeared from her face.
He continued.
“A child’s value is not determined by gender.”
Silence.
A brutal silence.

Because everyone heard it.
Everyone understood what Richard’s family believed.
And now everyone saw how ugly it sounded.
Richard’s face darkened.
“This is ridiculous.”
He pointed toward me.
“Eleanor has become unstable. She’s emotional. She refuses to accept reality.”
My grandfather’s eyes became colder.
“Reality?”
He tapped his cane once.
“Let us discuss reality.”
He motioned toward the man standing behind him.
A lawyer.
Holding a thick folder.
My heart started racing.
Richard noticed.
“What is that?”
My grandfather didn’t answer.
The lawyer stepped forward.
“Mr. Sterling, these documents concern the Vance Family Trust.”
Richard went completely still.
The room changed.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t a marriage argument.
This was business.
And Richard understood business.
“The trust is private,” he said.
The lawyer smiled.
“Yes.”
He opened the folder.
“Which is why it is interesting that we discovered multiple attempts to access it.”
Richard’s face lost color.
My grandfather looked directly at him.
“You weren’t trying to save your family name.”
He paused.
“You were trying to steal my granddaughter’s inheritance.”
Nobody moved.
Chloe looked at Richard.
“What is he talking about?”
Richard ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You knew?”
I looked at him.
“Knew what?”
His expression changed.
“You knew about the trust.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
A small smile crossed my face.
“But Grandfather did.”
My grandfather nodded.
“For years, I watched.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You watched?”
“Yes.”
“You let me marry her?”
My grandfather’s eyes became ice.
“I allowed my granddaughter to make her own choices.”
Then he stepped closer.
“But I also made sure she was protected.”
Richard looked around.
His perfect party.
His perfect image.
Everything was collapsing.
“You think you’ve won?”
He pointed at me.
“She has nothing without me.”
That was when I finally spoke.
“You still don’t understand, Richard.”
He looked at me.
“I never needed you.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because they were true.
For ten years, I had mistaken love for dependence.
I thought Richard completed my life.
But I was wrong.
He had only taken advantage of the parts of me I stopped protecting.
My grandfather opened another file.
“There is more.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
The lawyer removed several documents.
“Evidence regarding financial misconduct within Sterling Enterprises.”
The room erupted.
Guests whispered.
Phones appeared.
People started recording.
Richard looked around in panic.
“This is a setup.”
My grandfather shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at him.
“This is accountability.”
Then the front doors opened.
Two investigators entered.
Richard’s face changed.
“What is this?”
One investigator stepped forward.
“Mr. Richard Sterling, we need to ask you some questions regarding fraud allegations.”
The entire room went silent.
Chloe stepped away from him.
“Richard?”
He looked at her.
For the first time, he looked completely alone.
The woman he chose.
The empire he built.
The reputation he protected.
All disappearing.
But before he left, he turned back toward me.
“You did this.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I placed a hand over my daughter.
“You did.”
The investigators escorted him away.
And as the mansion doors closed behind him…
I realized something.
Richard thought he was destroying my life.
May you like
He had no idea…
He was removing himself from it.
