Chapter 3 - The Breach

Before Cordelia could process my words, the hallway outside exploded into chaos.
BANG-BANG-BANG!
The heavy oak front door of the penthouse rattled violently against its steel deadbolts as a heavy hydraulic breaching ram struck the center panel with thousands of pounds of concentrated force.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! SEARCH WARRANT! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!" a voice thundered through the wood, amplified by a bullhorn.
Cordelia jumped backward, her face turning from pale white to a hideous, hollow grey. Her hand flew to her pearl necklace, her eyes darting frantically around the foyer as if looking for a hidden exit that didn't exist.
"What is that?!" she screamed, her voice completely losing its refined, aristocratic cadence. "Callum! What is that?!"
Callum stood frozen in the center of the room, his mouth half-open, his eyes wide with absolute, paralyzing panic. "I... I don't know! Mother, who did she call?!"
BOOM!
The oak door didn't just open—it shattered.
The reinforced steel doorframe burst inward in a cloud of splinters, drywall dust, and twisted metal. The heavy door swung wildly on its broken hinges, crashing against the interior marble wall.
Flashbang grenades were not deployed due to my presence on the floor, but the sheer physical force of the tactical entry team charging through the opening filled the room with overwhelming, terrifying authority.
Six FBI SWAT operators dressed in full black tactical gear, carrying short-barreled carbines equipped with high-intensity weapon lights, poured through the shattered doorway in a seamless tactical wedge. The blinding white beams of their weapon lights swept across the foyer, cutting through the dust, illuminating the oil paintings, the marble statues, and the terrified faces of the Vance family.
"FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! GET ON THE GROUND! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
"DON'T MOVE! HANDS IN THE AIR! DOWN ON THE FLOOR!"
Callum immediately threw his hands into the air, dropping to his knees so hard his expensive trousers tore across the knee caps. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I'm unarmed! I'm Callum Vance!"
"FACE DOWN ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!" an operator roared, stepping forward, driving a heavy tactical boot into Callum’s shoulder blade, flattening him face-down against the marble floor.
Within three seconds, Callum’s arms were pulled violently behind his back, and the crisp, metallic CLACK-CLACK of heavy steel flex-cuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the room.
Cordelia, however, remained standing.
Even in the face of six automatic weapons aimed directly at her chest, her forty years of absolute impunity held her spine straight. She backed up against her writing desk, her chin lifted high, her eyes blazing with fury.
"How dare you!" Cordelia screamed at the operators, her voice trembling with rage. "Do you have any idea who I am?! I am Cordelia Vance! Call Director Miller at the Midwest Regional Office right now! He is a personal friend of mine! You are trespassing in a private residence!"
"Shut your mouth, ma'am!" the lead operator shouted, keeping his rifle trained on her center mass. "Hands where I can see them! Turn around and place your hands behind your back!"
"I will do no such thing!" Cordelia bellowed.
Through the dust and the strobe of flashing tactical lights, a tall figure in a dark charcoal suit and an FBI tactical vest walked calmly through the ruined doorway.
He carried no rifle. He held a leather-bound federal search warrant in his left hand, and his gold supervisor's badge glinted under the foyer lights.
It was Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance.
Cordelia’s eyes locked onto his face, and for the first time since the door had been breached, a genuine flicker of icy horror registered in her eyes.
Marcus Vance was not a stranger to her.
Twenty years ago, when Marcus was a young Assistant State's Attorney in Cook County, Cordelia’s late husband had personally engineered Marcus's removal from a high-profile municipal corruption prosecution, effectively forcing Marcus out of local law enforcement and into the federal system. For two decades, Cordelia had openly bragged at dinner parties about how her family had "broken that arrogant young prosecutor's career."
Marcus stopped four feet from Cordelia. He looked down at the paper in his hand, then looked up into her furious, wrinkled face.
"Good evening, Cordelia," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, smooth, and entirely devoid of heat. "It's been a long time."
"Marcus Vance..." Cordelia whispered, her voice finally wavering. "This is a personal vendetta. You used your office to fabricate—"
"Save it for the magistrate, Cordelia," Marcus interrupted smoothly. He gestured to the operator standing beside her. "Cuff her."
"Don't you dare touch me!" Cordelia shrieked as the operator grabbed her slim wrists, pulling them behind her silk sweater.
The metallic CLICK of standard-issue steel handcuffs locking around her wrists was the sweetest sound I had ever heard in my life.
Marcus didn't waste another second on her. He turned away from Cordelia and walked straight toward the corner of the room where I was sitting against the mahogany table.
He dropped to one knee beside me, his tactical gear clanking softly. His calm, grey eyes scanned my face, taking in the blood trickling down my temple, the swelling on my forehead, and the torn hem of my coat.
"Clara," Marcus said gently, placing a warm, heavy hand on my uninjured shoulder. "Are you alright? Can you hear me clearly?"
I let out a long, shaky breath, the adrenaline that had sustained me for the last two hours finally beginning to drain away, leaving me cold and trembling.
"I hear you, Marcus," I whispered, reaching into my coat pocket and pulling out the secondary iPhone. The screen was still glowing, showing the active, unbroken audio stream to the federal building. "Did you get all of it?"
May you like
Marcus took the phone from my hand, checked the screen, and offered me a small, grim smile.
"Every single syllable, Clara," Marcus said quietly. "Extortion, conspiracy, physical assault, obstruction of justice, and a full verbal confession to the shell companies in the Caymans. You gave us the entire crown."
