Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Two hours later, the courtroom was packed to capacity as Judge Harrison delivered the final sentences.
For her role in the physical assault, conspiracy, and corporate espionage, Odalys Crane was sentenced to twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole for fifteen years. As the sentence was read, she collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as federal marshals lifted her up and led her out.
For his role as the mastermind behind the financial fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to inflict severe bodily harm on his pregnant wife, Silas Vance received a sentence of thirty-five years in federal prison, alongside total asset forfeiture amounting to over one hundred and twenty million dollars.
Every dollar of his seized fortune was court-ordered to be placed into an irrevocable trust for my unborn daughter.
As Silas was led away in heavy leg irons, his corporate empire officially died. The news channels broadcasted the outcome live to millions of viewers across the country, hailing the verdict as one of the most decisive victories against corporate malice in modern history.
That evening, the sun set in a brilliant display of orange and gold over Lake Michigan.
I sat in the nursery of our new estate—a historic, heavily guarded manor nestled in forty acres of private woodland outside the city. The room was fully decorated now: soft velvet armchairs, crib crafted from white oak, and walls painted in soft pastel cream.
My father walked in, carrying a small, beautifully carved wooden box. He sat down in the rocking chair beside me.
"Is it over now, Father?" I asked softly, resting my hands on my belly.
"The public battle is over, little bird," Marcus said, setting the wooden box on his lap. "Silas and Odalys will spend the rest of their youth behind concrete walls. Vance Dynamics is now entirely yours. The world knows who you are."
He opened the wooden box. Inside lay an old, yellowed document stamped with official government seals from thirty years ago, alongside a dark platinum key.
"What is this?" I asked, looking at the papers.
"This is the deed to The Sovereign Vault in Zurich," Marcus explained, his voice solemn. "Inside that vault are the complete historical records, operational keys, and asset reserves of The Apex. When I retired, I swore I would never pass this burden to you. I wanted you to live a normal life."
He looked into my eyes, his expression filled with immense love and quiet respect.
"But over the past few weeks, I watched you stand up against the people who tried to destroy you. You didn't break, Seraphina. You didn't hide behind my strength—you stepped forward and took back your life with your own courage. You have the heart of an Osei."
I reached out, my fingers touching the cool metal of the platinum key.
"I don't want to rule a shadow empire, Father," I said softly.
Marcus smiled, a warm, gentle expression that made the lines around his eyes crinkle. "You don't have to, my child. The Apex was created to protect those who cannot protect themselves from the monstrous greed of the powerful. You don't need to fight wars. You only need to ensure that no one ever threatens your peace again."
Suddenly, a sharp, familiar pressure tightened across my lower back. I gasped, clutching the armrest of the chair as my breath caught in my throat.
Marcus jumped to his feet, his calm composure instantly vanishing into raw panic. "Seraphina? What is it?"
"Father..." I squeezed my eyes shut, taking a deep, ragged breath as warm fluid soaked through my dress. "I think... I think your granddaughter is ready to meet you."
Within seconds, the quiet villa transformed into a military-grade medical operation. Nikolai clicked his radio, signaling the medical team stationed on the grounds, while my father threw open the doors, calling for Nurse Priya and the obstetricians.

As they gently helped me onto a rolling gurney toward the private medical wing of the estate, my father walked right beside me, holding my hand tightly in his.
"Hold on, little bird," he whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion I had never heard from him before. "You're safe now. You're home."
