PART 3: THE SECRET BEHIND THE AFFAIR

For several seconds…

Nobody spoke.

The cathedral was filled with people who had come to mourn my father.

But now they were witnessing something else.

A family collapsing in real time.

My husband stood across from me.

The woman he betrayed me with stood beside him.

And in my hand…

Was my father’s final warning.

Not about the affair.

Something worse.

Something he believed was dangerous enough that he had to prepare for it before he died.

I looked down at the letter again.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that signed my birthday cards.

The same handwriting that wrote me advice when I was twenty and heartbroken.

The same handwriting that now told me my marriage wasn’t the only thing that had been built on lies.

“Natalie…”

Grant’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He looked different now.

Not like my husband.

Like someone caught.

Like someone who had run out of excuses.

“How much did you know?”

I asked.

His face tightened.

“What?”

“The will.”

My fingers gripped the paper.

“How much did you know about my father changing it?”

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know everything.”

A cold laugh escaped me.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was exactly the kind of answer guilty people gave.

Not a denial.

A negotiation.

“What did you know?”

He looked around.

At all the people watching.

Then lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

I stared at him.

The same words.

Again.

Not here.

The first time, he said it because he didn’t want a scene.

Now he said it because he didn’t want the truth.

I stepped closer.

“No.”

My voice echoed through the cathedral.

“You don’t get to decide when the truth is allowed anymore.”

Everyone went silent.

Grant looked embarrassed.

Good.

He should.

Rebecca suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Grant, say something.”

He looked at her.

And for a second…

I saw something strange.

Annoyance.

Not love.

Not concern.

Annoyance.

As if she had become a problem.

That told me more than any confession.

Because when everything fell apart…

He wasn’t protecting her.

He was protecting himself.

Jonathan stepped forward.

“There is another recording.”

My head turned.

“What?”

The lawyer reached into his briefcase.

“A recording your father left.”

Grant’s face immediately changed.

A real reaction.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“How?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Your father was very thorough.”

He pressed a button.

The cathedral speakers came alive.

Static.

Then my father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“Natalie, if you are hearing this…”

I closed my eyes.

Hearing him was harder than reading his words.

Because for a moment…

I forgot he was gone.

“I wish I could be there when you hear this.”

A pause.

“But if I’m not…”

His voice softened.

“Then I need you to be stronger than the people who hurt you.”

My throat tightened.

“I discovered something about Grant.”

Everyone looked toward him.

Grant’s face turned pale.

My father continued.

“At first, I believed it was simply betrayal.”

“An affair.”

“A mistake.”

“But then I found financial records.”

The room became silent.

“Transfers.”

“Hidden accounts.”

“Money moving through companies connected to people who wanted control of Whitmore Industries.”

My hands went cold.

Money.

This wasn’t just cheating.

This was business.

A plan.

A takeover.

Rebecca whispered:

“No.”

Everyone heard her.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

I turned toward her.

“What did you know?”

She shook her head.

“I…”

“Tell me.”

Her eyes moved to Grant.

And that hesitation was enough.

Because she wasn’t afraid of me.

She was afraid of him.

My father’s recording continued.

“I don’t know if Grant planned to hurt Natalie from the beginning.”

“But I do know this.”

“He started searching for ways to gain control over my company before he started seeing Rebecca.”

The room exploded with whispers.

I stared at Grant.

“Is that true?”

He didn’t answer.

“Grant.”

Still nothing.

My voice dropped.

“Look at me.”

Slowly…

He did.

And I saw it.

The man I married wasn’t there anymore.

Or maybe…

He had never been there.

Jonathan placed another folder on the table.

“Your father hired investigators.”

He opened it.

“Six months before his death.”

Inside were reports.

Emails.

Contracts.

Names.

Grant’s name appeared everywhere.

Rebecca’s too.

But there was something else.

A third name.

A company.

I frowned.

“What is this?”

Jonathan looked at me.

“A shell company.”

“Owned by?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your husband.”

The room went completely silent.

Grant finally spoke.

“Natalie, listen to me.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He stepped closer.

“I can explain.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“But you can try.”

He stopped.

Because he knew.

There was no way back.

“I made mistakes.”

I almost smiled.

Mistakes.

Such a small word.

For everything.

“You stole from my family.”

“No.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You used my father’s trust.”

His silence answered.

Then Rebecca stepped forward.

“I didn’t know.”

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at me.

“I swear.”

“You knew enough to wear my dress.”

Her face changed.

A flash of shame.

Then anger.

“You think this was easy for me?”

I stared.

She laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea what it’s like watching someone like you.”

“Someone who has everything.”

“A perfect marriage.”

“A powerful family.”

She looked at Grant.

“I thought he loved me.”

A painful silence.

Because that was the first honest thing she had said.

She wasn’t innocent.

But she wasn’t the mastermind either.

She was another person who believed a lie.

My father’s recording continued.

“The final piece of evidence is in my private vault.”

My eyes lifted.

Vault?

“Natalie, only you can open it.”

Jonathan nodded.

“I have the access information.”

Grant immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

He realized his mistake.

Too late.

Because that one word revealed everything.

He wasn’t worried about me.

He was worried about what was inside.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Not because I called.

Because my father had already arranged it.

Jonathan explained everything.

The evidence.

The financial crimes.

The attempted takeover.

Grant was questioned.

Rebecca too.

But before they took Grant away, he looked at me.

And for the first time…

He looked human.

“Natalie.”

I didn’t answer.

“I really did love you.”

The words hurt.

Because maybe part of him believed it.

Maybe that was the tragedy.

He could love me…

And still destroy me.

I looked at him.

“If you loved me…”

I paused.

“You wouldn’t have spent years planning how to take everything from me.”

He had no answer.

That night…

I opened my father’s private vault.

Inside was not money.

Not jewelry.

Not company documents.

It was a collection of letters.

Photographs.

And one final envelope.

This one wasn’t addressed to me.

It said:

For the daughter of the man who tried to destroy us.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the name.

The person my father feared.

The person behind everything.

And the person I never expected.

My mother’s name.

Written across the envelope.

I stared.

Unable to breathe.

Because suddenly…

My father’s secret was not just about Grant.

It was about my own family.

May you like

And the truth waiting inside that envelope…

Was going to change everything.
