Chapter 4 - The Digital Firestorm

Miles away in Manhattan, while Richard was busy pouring another round of tequila shots for his fraternity brothers by the rented pool, his phone buzzed violently on the outdoor patio table.
He didn't look at it immediately. He was in the middle of recounting, with exaggerated comedic flair, how he had "put his wife in her place" after she ruined the party vibe.
"I mean, seriously, guys," Richard laughed, throwing his arm around Vanessa’s bare shoulder. "You gotta establish dominance early with women like that. Otherwise, they walk all over you. She thinks she’s queen of the castle just because she changes diapers all day."
Vanessa giggled, leaning into his chest. "Honestly, babe, you handled it like a boss. I posted the video to my Instagram Reels and TikTok about an hour ago, and it’s already blowing up."
Richard frowned, breaking away from his drink. "You posted what?"
"The cake thing!" Vanessa chirped, unlocking her phone and waving it in his face. "Look! It’s got forty thousand views already. People are calling her a psycho drama queen who deserved it. Your brand is going viral, babe!"
Richard snatched the phone out of her hand. His eyes scanned the vertical video playing on the screen. There it was: his hand gripping my hair, shoving my face deep into the pink frosting, the explosion of pink cream, Lily’s terrified wail, and my quiet, unblinking recovery.
At first, a cold spike of panic hit his stomach. In the corporate world of modern real estate development, optics were everything. A video like this could trigger an HR review at his firm, especially since his regional director was a notorious family-values stickler.
He scrolled down to the comments section, expecting a wave of backlash.
Instead, his breath caught in his throat.
“LOL, what a based husband. Teach that Karen a lesson!” “She totally deserved it for ruining her kid's birthday with her bad attitude.” “W husband. Where do I find a guy who puts his wife in her place like this?” “Serves her right. Look at her standing there looking miserable. Toxic wife alert!”
The algorithmic engine of social media had taken Vanessa’s cruel caption—“When the ungrateful wife tries to ruin her own kid’s birthday party for attention, hubby takes matters into his own hands! 😂💀”—and fed it straight into the digital sewer of toxic internet culture. Within four hours, the video had been reposted by three major aggregator accounts, crossing two million views, generating thousands of shares, and triggering an avalanche of misogynistic applause.
Richard’s panic evaporated instantly, replaced by a warm, intoxicating rush of vanity.
He puffed out his chest, his phone screen illuminating his smug, smiling face. He wasn't a domestic abuser in the eyes of the internet; he was a viral king. A meme. A strong patriarch putting a toxic, ungrateful woman in her proper place.
"See?" Richard laughed, handing the phone back to Vanessa while his friends gathered around to pat him on the back. "I told you. People know what’s up. Maya’s just a drag. Always has been."
"You’re officially internet famous, babe," Vanessa purred, kissing his cheek. "You should do an interview or something. Monetize the clout!"
None of them noticed the notification bell ringing quietly on a separate device across the patio—a secure, encrypted terminal operating on a private server in Manhattan, where a young data analyst in Julian Sterling’s employ had just flagged the viral video, extracted the metadata, cross-referenced Richard’s employer identification number, and forwarded the complete digital dossier directly to Julian’s personal iPad.
Inside his leather-bound study on the Upper East Side, Julian Sterling sat in a velvet armchair, a glass of single-malt scotch resting on the side table.
He watched the ten-second loop of the video three times.
He watched Richard’s arrogant, grinning face. He watched Vanessa’s gleeful filming. He watched my face emerge from the pink frosting, calm, centered, and terrifyingly cold.
Then Julian picked up his secure satellite phone and dialed his chief legal counsel, a shark named Marcus Vance—ironically, no relation to Richard, though sharing a last name by sheer cosmic coincidence.
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that made senior partners sweat.
"Good evening, Mr. Sterling. Working late on the European logistics acquisition?"
"Put the European acquisition on hold for forty-eight hours," Julian instructed smoothly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass.
There was a sharp pause on the other end of the line. "Sir? That’s a four-hundred-million-dollar deal—"
"I don't care if it's a four-billion-dollar deal," Julian interrupted, his eyes fixed on a photograph of my face frozen on his iPad screen. "I want you to initiate a comprehensive corporate, financial, and legal audit of a mid-level real estate firm in Long Island called Meridian Realty Group. Specifically, target their senior acquisitions manager, a man named Richard Vance."
"Richard Vance?" Marcus repeated, flipping through his digital database. "Wait... isn't that my cousin’s idiot husband? What did he do?"
"He made a very public mistake," Julian said softly, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching the corners of his mouth. "And now, Marcus, we are going to teach him what it really means to have the floor pulled out from under you. I want his bank accounts frozen, his credit lines revoked, his employment terminated by Monday morning, and his mortgage called in by noon."
"Consider it done, Mr. Sterling," Marcus said, his professional killer instinct kicking in instantly. "Do you want us to notify the authorities regarding the domestic assault captured in that viral video as well?"
May you like
Julian looked down at the silver signet ring resting on his finger—the very same orchid emblem that matched the one hidden beneath my blouse in Long Island.
"No, Marcus," Julian murmured, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering skyline of Manhattan. "Let him keep his illusions of power for a few more hours. I want to be the one who delivers the final blow."
