PART 5 — The Truth Behind the Bear

For a moment, I didn't recognize the man standing in front of me.
Not because Daniel looked different.
He didn't.
Same face.
Same voice.
Same wedding ring.
Same eyes that had looked at me every morning for nine years.
That was the terrifying part.
The person who had betrayed me wasn't a stranger.
It was the person who knew exactly where I kept my fears.
Exactly what hurt me.
Exactly how to reach my daughter.
"Daniel."
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
"Explain."
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Looked at the documents again.
"I didn't send the bear."
That wasn't an answer.
I stepped closer.
"I didn't ask who sent the bear."
My eyes stayed on him.
"I asked why your signature is on these files."
His face tightened.
"I didn't know about those transfers."
Aaron gave a cold laugh.
"Your signature says otherwise."
Daniel looked at him.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Aaron stepped forward.
"We understand perfectly."
"Your father-in-law found evidence connecting your family companies to illegal financial movements."
"He hid the proof."
"And someone spent years trying to recover it."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"That's not what happened."
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
A part of me still wanted to believe the man I married.
The man who stayed awake with me during Lily's fevers.
The man who cried when she took her first steps.
The man who promised me:
"Nobody will ever hurt our daughter."
But those words felt different now.
Because someone had.
And somehow...
The trail led back to him.
"Tell us the truth."
I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
His eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.
Regret.
Fear.
Maybe both.
Then he sat down.
Slowly.
Like his body had finally accepted that there was nowhere left to run.
"My father started it."
Aaron watched him carefully.
"Started what?"
"The accounts."
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Years ago, my father used shell companies to move money."
"Your father discovered it."
I stared at him.
"Then why are you involved?"
He didn't answer.
Not immediately.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Finally he said:
"Because I tried to fix it."
Nobody moved.
"You tried to fix it?"
I repeated.
"By hiding evidence?"
"No."
He looked desperate now.
"I was trying to gather everything."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
His eyes lowered.
"Because if you knew..."
He swallowed.
"...you would have been in danger."
I almost laughed.
A broken, empty sound.
"In danger?"
I pointed toward the hallway.
"Our daughter was targeted."
"Someone put a camera in her birthday present."
"Do you understand that?"
His face collapsed.
"I know."
"You know?"
"I found out after the package was sent."
The room went silent.
Aaron stepped forward.
"Who sent it?"
Daniel looked at him.
"I don't know."
"Try again."
"I'm serious."
He looked exhausted.
"I suspected my mother."
I froze.
"Your mother?"
He nodded.
"After I stopped speaking to them, she started asking questions."
"What questions?"
He looked at me.
"About your father's belongings."
"About the attic."
"About whether you had found anything."
My stomach turned.
"So you knew."
He looked at me.
"I suspected."
"That is not the same thing."
"No."
My voice became sharper.
"It is worse."
"You knew someone was looking for something in our home."
"You knew our daughter could be involved."
"And you said nothing."
Daniel looked destroyed.
"I was trying to protect you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You were trying to control the situation."
The sentence hit him.
Because he knew it was true.
He had made the decision for me.
Just like everyone else.
Aaron opened the laptop again.
"There is still one problem."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
"The teddy bear."
He turned the screen.
"The device was activated before delivery."
"So whoever sent it had access."
"Yes."
Aaron clicked another file.
A delivery record appeared.
The package had not been shipped from Margaret's house.
It came from a private courier.
Paid by an anonymous account.
Then...
Another detail appeared.
The pickup location.
A storage facility.
Owned by...
Blackwood Holdings.
Daniel went pale.
"No."
He stood up.
"That's impossible."
Aaron looked at him.
"Is it?"
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
Nobody spoke.
Only breathing.
A woman's voice finally came through.
Calm.
Familiar.
"You found the box."
My blood turned cold.
Margaret.
I put the phone on speaker.
"Why?"
I asked.
There was a small laugh.
"Because your father should have never trusted you."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mom?"
Silence.
Then:
"Oh, Daniel."
A disappointed sigh.
"You were always too weak."
His face changed.
"You sent the bear?"
"No."
She replied.
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
"It means someone else moved faster than I did."
My heart stopped.
Someone else?
Margaret continued.
"I only wanted the password."
"For what?"
I asked.
Another pause.
Then she answered:
"For the files your father hid."
"Files that prove who really destroyed the Caldwell company."
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Because this was bigger than money.
Bigger than revenge.
Then Margaret said something that made all of us freeze.
"Claire..."
"Your father wasn't hiding evidence from me."
"He was hiding evidence from Daniel."
Daniel stepped backward.
"What?"
Her voice became colder.
"Ask your husband why your father stopped trusting him."
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
The truth had changed again.
The person I thought betrayed me...
Might have been hiding something.
The person I thought was protecting me...
Might have been involved.
And somewhere inside all those secrets...
My father had left one final warning.
A warning I had ignored.
Because I trusted my husband.

Now I had one question left:
Who was Daniel Blackwood really?
