Chapter 3 - The Web of Betrayal

"I didn't cut the lines!" Thomas panicked, taking a step backward until his spine hit the cold filing cabinet. "I swear on my mother's grave, Luca! I didn't cut them! I only loosened the master hydraulic fitting under the frame! It was meant to leak slowly! She was supposed to lose brake pressure miles down the road on the highway, near the gas station, so she’d be forced to stop!"
"She died three minutes after leaving the gates, Thomas," I said, stepping closer to him. "She took the sharp turn over the creek, pressed the pedal, and went straight through the wooden guardrail."
"It was Victor!" Thomas sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at the secretary. "Victor paid me fifty thousand dollars from the maintenance slush fund! He told me she was going to ruin the family enterprise, that she was mentally unstable and going to leak false financial records to the federal auditors!"
Victor Hale didn't flinch. He adjusted his cuff links, staring at Thomas with utter contempt. "Fool," Victor sneered quietly. "You spent eight years taking a paycheck from this family, living in the gatehouse rent-free, and you break the second a thirty-year-old tape plays."
"So it was you," I said, looking Victor dead in the eyes. "You orchestrated my sister's murder to cover up the theft of thirty million dollars from the Moretti foundation."
"I saved this family from bankruptcy!" Victor spat back, his calm veneer finally shattering, revealing the cold, arrogant megalomaniac underneath. "Your father was a dreamer, Luca! He spent millions on foolish philanthropic ventures in South America while the core holding companies were bleeding cash! Marco and I took the capital, invested it in offshore private equity, and tripled the family's net worth! Alessandra found the secondary ledger and was going to hand it over to the District Attorney out of some absurd moral crusade!"
"She was my sister," I said.
"She was a threat to the empire!" Victor countered. "And if you had known the truth back then, you would have destroyed everything your father built trying to avenge her! I kept this family alive!"
"And what about Marco?" I asked, turning my gaze to my cousin.
Marco dropped to his knees on the concrete floor, tears streaming down his face. "Luca, please! I didn't know Victor was going to harm her! I thought we were just going to stop her car, take the ledger back, and send her to a private clinic in Switzerland until she calmed down! I swear to God, I didn't know about the brakes!"
"You stood next to me at her casket, Marco," I said, my heart feeling like a heavy piece of iron inside my chest. "You held my arm while they lowered her into the ground. You gave the eulogy."
"I was terrified!" Marco wept, clutching his hands together in prayer. "Victor told me if I said a word, he would pin the entire embezzlement on me! He had forged my signature on every offshore wire transfer!"
"Because you were weak, Marco," Victor said, looking down at his cousin with disgust. "You took your cut, you bought your yachts, you drank your expensive wine, and you let me carry the weight of the hard decisions."
I stood between the three men, the soft blue static of the TV screen illuminating the room. The truth had finally emerged from the dark, cold corners of eight years of silence. But the nightmare was far from over.
"Elena," I said without looking back.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Take Sophie upstairs. Lock yourselves in the master suite on the third floor."
"Yes, sir." Her footsteps faded quickly as she hurried up the stone stairs.
I reached into my inner jacket pocket, pulled out my encrypted mobile phone, and unlocked the screen.
"Who are you calling, Luca?" Victor asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark low.
"The State Police," I replied. "And the Federal Prosecutor."
Victor smiled—a thin, lifeless expression. "You really think you can call anyone from this basement?"
