Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The tension in our home was suffocating over the next forty-eight hours. Alejandro moved his belongings into the guest cottage on the estate, giving my mother and me space. For the first time in twenty years, I felt a fragile, tender bond forming between my mother and me. Her memory was returning in fragments—she recognized old lullabies, remembered her love for gardening, and held my hand with a mother's instinct that time and trauma could not erase.
However, Victor Sterling was not a man to wait passively for his empire to crumble.
On Thursday evening, while I was preparing dinner with my mother, the lights in the house suddenly flickered and died. The backup generator failed to kick in. Before I could call out to the staff, the kitchen door burst open, and two men in dark clothing stepped into the room.
"Mrs. Cruz," one of them said, holding a heavy silenced pistol. "You're coming with us. Both of you."
I shielded my mother behind me, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Victor sent you?"
"Mr. Sterling likes to clean up loose ends once and for all," the man replied coldly.
Before he could step closer, the heavy glass doors leading to the patio shattered inward. Alejandro lunged into the room, tackling the armed man to the floor. The gun went off with a muffled pop, the bullet shattering a kitchen tile.
"Mariana, run!" Alejandro roared, wrestling with the intruder.
I grabbed my mother's hand and fled through the back corridor toward the garage. Behind us, I heard the sound of brutal physical struggle—shouts, furniture shattering, and another gunshot.
"Alejandro!" I screamed, stopping near the garage entrance.
"Keep going, Mariana!" he called out, his voice strained.
I dragged my mother into my SUV, locked the doors, and slammed my foot on the accelerator, crashing through the wooden garage gate and speeding out onto the main road. I immediately dialed 911, reporting the home invasion and providing the authorities with Victor Sterling's name and location.
Half an hour later, police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights swarmed our estate. I drove back, my heart in my throat, praying that Alejandro was still alive.
When I pulled up the driveway, paramedics were loading Alejandro onto a stretcher. He was conscious, though his face was bruised and a bloody bandage was wrapped tightly around his shoulder where a bullet had grazed him.
I rushed to his side, tears flooding my eyes. "Alejandro!"
He squeezed my hand feebly, offering a weak smile. "I kept them away from you," he whispered. "I finally did the right thing."

The lead detective walked over to us, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "Mrs. Cruz, Mr. Cruz handed us a flash drive before the paramedics arrived. It contains twenty years of financial records, recorded phone conversations, and forged documents proving Victor Sterling's involvement in land fraud, attempted murder, and extortion."
Victor Sterling was arrested at his private airport hangar two hours later while attempting to board a private jet to a non-extradition country.
