Chapter 2 - The Hospital Ward

The charity ward of Swedish Medical Center smelled of stale bleach, metallic blood, and cheap industrial disinfectant.
In Bed 14 of the crowded, noisy floor, Sophie Miller lay completely still beneath a thin, scratchy white blanket.
Her face was paper-white, dark purple shadows hanging heavily beneath her closed eyes. An IV line dripped cheap saline into her bruised forearm, while an ancient monitor beeped erratically beside her bed.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ward were slammed open.
Two dozen high-ranking hospital administrators, led personally by the Chief of Surgery, rushed down the hallway in a panic, clearing out visitors and dragging privacy curtains back.
Behind them walked Ethan Cole.
He looked entirely out of place amidst the crumbling linoleum and flickering fluorescent lights—a shadow of unyielding wealth and lethal power wrapped in a ten-thousand-dollar suit, holding a tiny, tired six-year-old girl wrapped tightly in his warm cashmere coat.
Amy leaned against Ethan’s broad shoulder, her small arm wrapped around his neck, pointing her little finger toward the far corner.
“There’s Mommy!” Amy whispered excitedly.
Ethan stepped past the stunned nurses, stopping right beside Bed 14.
Sophie stirred at the sound of her daughter's voice. She forced her heavy eyelids open, her vision blurry, her breath shallow.
“Amy...?” Sophie rasped out, her dry lips cracking. “Oh God... Amy, where were you? The nurse said you weren't in the waiting room—I was so scared—”
“I cleaned the big desk, Mommy!” Amy chimed in proudly, reaching down from Ethan’s arms to wave her tiny hand. “I saved your job! The nice man gave me toast!”
Sophie’s eyes slowly shifted from her daughter up to the massive, imposing man standing over her bed.
Her heart dropped into her stomach.
She recognized him instantly from the corporate security training videos and the giant bronze plaques in the lobby of the Cole Tower. He was Ethan Cole—the absolute owner of Cole Enterprises, and the undisputed, terrifying mob boss who ruled the Pacific Northwest underworld.
“M-Mr. Cole...” Sophie stammered in absolute panic, trying desperately to sit up, her IV line yank to its limit. “Please... please don't fire me! She’s just a child, she didn't mean to trespass—I’ll come to work tonight, I swear I’ll finish the whole floor—”
“Be quiet,” Ethan said gently, resting a strong, warm hand on her shoulder, pushing her back down against the pillow.
Sophie froze under his touch, her breath catching in her throat. His hand was immense, radiating a intense, unexpected warmth that seemed to cut right through the icy chill of the hospital room.
“You are not going to work tonight,” Ethan told her, his dark blue eyes fixing on her fragile face with an intensity that made her blood hum. “Or tomorrow. Or next week.”
“Please...” tears welled in Sophie’s pale eyes. “I need the health insurance for Amy. If I lose this job, we’ll be on the street—”
“You are being moved,” Ethan cut her off smoothly.
He turned to the trembling Chief of Surgery standing behind him. “Move her to the VIP penthouse suite on the top floor immediately. Assign your best private surgical team. If she wants for anything—a doctor, a meal, a blanket—you call me directly. If I hear so much as a single complaint about her care, I will buy this hospital and tear it down to the ground.”
The Chief of Surgery turned pale and bowed frantically. “R-Right away, Mr. Cole! Right away!”
Sophie stared at Ethan in absolute, utter shock. “Why... why are you doing this for us? You don't even know who I am.”

Ethan looked down at Amy, who had fallen asleep against his chest, her small hand clutching his designer lapel.
“Your daughter saved your life today, Miss Miller,” Ethan said quietly, his voice dropping into a low, possessive rumble. “And from this moment on, no one in this city will ever make either of you suffer again.”
