Chapter 8 - The Table of Grace

Later that night, after the last guests had departed and the jazz band had packed away their instruments, the restaurant staff set up a special, private table on the edge of the waterfront pier under the moonlit sky.
The table was covered with a crisp linen tablecloth, illuminated by flickering candles inside glass hurricanes, and decorated with fresh white lilies.
The head chef carried out three massive silver platters.
On the platters lay double-sized portions of garlic butter giant prawns, broiled lobster tails, seared scallops, fresh warm artisan bread, and a massive slice of three-tier dark chocolate cake.
I sat at the head of the small table. Hazel sat on my right, and Sophie sat on my left.
There were no plastic plates. There were no cold leftovers. There were no cruel whispers, no conditional love, and no men demanding gratitude for food they had not paid for.
Sophie looked at the massive silver platter of garlic shrimp sitting directly in front of her plate, her wide eyes sparkling beneath the moonlight.
"Mommy," Sophie asked softly, touching the silver fork beside her plate. "Is all of this really for us?"
I leaned over, wrapping my arms around both of my daughters, pulling them tight against my heart, kissing their foreheads under the gentle ocean breeze.
"Yes, my sweet girls," I whispered, my voice thick with boundless love and unshakeable pride. "Every single bite is for you. You will never, ever have to eat off a plastic plate again. You will always sit at the head of the table."
Hazel looked up at me, her dark eyes shining with pure joy and deep admiration. "Because you bought it, right Mommy?"
I smiled—a real, radiant, unfettered smile that reached all the way to my soul.

"Because we earned it, my brave girls," I said softly. "Now... eat as much as you want. The table belongs to us."
And under the vast, glittering canopy of the midnight sky, surrounded by the sweet aroma of garlic butter, fresh bread, and complete freedom, we ate together—a real family, bound by love, dignity, and a future that no one could ever take away.
