Chapter 4 - The House of Mirrors

The day of the 'cleansing' arrived. Clara came to me in the kitchen, her eyes gleaming with a manic light. She had found a discrepancy in her files—a file she thought she had deleted. She knew something was wrong.
"You've been digging, haven't you, Ethan?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm. She held a kitchen knife, her fingers tracing the edge of the blade.
"I don't know what you mean," I said, maintaining my stance.
"Don't lie to me. I see the way you look at her. You think you can save her? You’re just another man who will fail."
She lunged.
It was a blur—the move of a woman who had trained in combat, a woman who knew exactly where to strike. I dodged, the knife slashing through my sleeve, grazing my arm. I pushed her back, but she was faster, more agile than I had anticipated.
"Harper, go!" I screamed.
Harper was already running for the door, but Clara was blocking the exit. She threw the knife, not at me, but at the wall beside Harper’s head. It embedded itself with a sickening thud.
"No one leaves," Clara whispered, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. "We are a family. We stay together until the end."
I grabbed a heavy vase from the sideboard and threw it, distracting her just long enough to tackle her to the floor. We wrestled, our movements desperate and violent. I was trained in ER combat, but she was trained in murder. She fought with a strength that shouldn't have existed, a manic intensity fueled by years of repressed rage.
I managed to pin her arms, but she kicked me in the ribs, sending me reeling back. She scrambled for the knife, but then—the front door burst open.
Police. Marcus had arrived.
"Hands up! Now!"
Clara froze. The mask fell. In one second, she went from a killer to a trembling, innocent-looking woman. She dropped the knife and looked at the officers with tear-filled eyes.
"He... he attacked me," she sobbed, pointing at me. "He’s been abusive for weeks. I tried to protect Harper, and he... he just snapped."

I stared at her, stunned by the sheer, audacious power of her performance. The officers looked at me, then at the knife, then at Clara.
"Ethan Miller," the lead officer said, stepping toward me. "You’re under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon."
