Chapter 6 - The Fall of Ethan Hale

By four o'clock that afternoon, the main lobby of St. Jude’s Women’s Hospital was quiet. The rain outside had stopped, leaving bright, cold sunlight streaming through the massive glass atrium windows.
Ethan Hale sat on a leather couch near the central information desk. He had spent six hours sitting there under the watchful eyes of two hospital security officers. His eyes were red, his hair was messy, and his expensive cashmere sweater was wrinkled. He looked like a man who was watching his entire life disintegrate in real-time.
Every time the elevator doors opened, Ethan jumped to his feet, searching franticly for my face.
At 4:15 PM, the glass elevator descended from the upper floors.
The doors slid open.
I stepped out into the lobby. I was wearing my dark coat over my clothes, holding my personal handbag tightly in my right hand. Beside me walked my personal attorney, Marcus Thorne—a sharp, formidable man who had arrived at the hospital forty minutes ago after my urgent phone call—and Michelle Avery.
Behind us walked two uniformed detectives from the City Police Department Financial and Commercial Crimes Unit.
Ethan saw me and gasped, lunging forward off the couch.
"Mara!" Ethan cried out, running toward me with his hands outstretched, tears welling up in his eyes. "Oh, thank God! Mara, please! Talk to me! I've been sitting down here for six hours losing my mind! Is Leo okay? Can we go home now?!"
He reached out to grab my shoulders.
Marcus Thorne stepped smoothly into his path, placing a firm, broad hand against Ethan’s chest, halting him mid-step.
"Step back, Mr. Hale," Marcus said, his voice echoing authoritatively across the quiet lobby. "I am Marcus Thorne, legal counsel representing your wife, Catherine Mara Hale."
Ethan stared at Marcus, then looked past him at my cold, expressionless face. "Legal counsel?! Mara, what the hell is this?! Why did you hire a lawyer?! We’re married! We have a newborn son upstairs!"
"You had a son upstairs, Ethan," I said, my voice so quiet, so devoid of emotion, that it caused Ethan to flinch as if he had been struck. "And you have a daughter on the third floor."
Ethan froze.
The air seemed to leave his lungs all at once. His eyes went wide, darting frantically from my face to Michelle Avery, then to the two police detectives standing behind us.
"Mara... listen to me..." Ethan whimpered, taking a tiny, desperate step backward. "She... she lied to you... whatever Celeste told you down there is a lie—"
"Celeste didn't just talk to me, Ethan," I said, pulling a printed stack of paper from my handbag and holding it up for him to see. "She gave me your text messages. She gave me your wire transfer receipts. She gave me the lease agreement for the apartment you rented her on Fifth Street."
Ethan’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face went entirely white, his skin glistening with a sudden layer of cold, terrified sweat.
"And Michelle Avery provided the cyber-audit trail from Vanguard Bio-Tech," Marcus Thorne added smoothly, stepping forward and handing a thick blue legal folder to the lead detective. "Which proves that Mr. Hale utilized his corporate administrative credentials to illegally hack into St. Jude’s medical mainframe, committing grand healthcare insurance fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement by attempting to bill his mistress’s forty-thousand-dollar C-section delivery to his wife's private family trust fund."
The lead detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
"Ethan Hale," the detective stated sternly. "You are under arrest for felony healthcare fraud, identity theft, unauthorized access to a protected computer network, and corporate embezzlement."
"No!" Ethan shrieked, backing away toward the glass atrium doors. "No! You can't do this! This is a private family matter! Mara, tell them to stop! Tell them we can work this out! I did it for us! I did it to save our money!"
"You didn't do it for us, Ethan," I said, standing tall and unyielding as the police officers grabbed Ethan’s arms, twisting them behind his back and snapping the cold steel cuffs around his wrists. "You did it because you are a selfish, narcissistic coward who thought he could use two women and two children to play a game."
"Mara! Please!" Ethan sobbed loudly as the officers forced his hands down against his waist. The remaining visitors and nurses in the lobby turned to stare in shock as the proud corporate executive was dragged toward the sliding glass doors. "I love you! Think of Leo! Leo needs his father!"
I stepped right up to Ethan as he was led past me, looking him dead in his weeping eyes.

"Leo has a mother who loves him," I said, my voice echoing with absolute finality. "And starting today, he will never have to hear your name again."
The double glass doors opened, and the detectives marched Ethan Hale out into the bright, cold afternoon sunlight, shoving him into the back seat of a waiting police cruiser.
